I quite liked Flores (after Belize City which I did not like) where I stayed overnight. A nice little village by a lake.
Tikal is huge and guides have pulled down all signs so people have to use them instead. The local maps are pretty hopeless too. But you can easily wander around yourself and see much of it. Take a bottle of water with you and maybe some food as you'll spend hours wandering around, along with lots of other tourists. Early is best time to get there.
