Same exact post is on many travel forums. Too bad the poster had blinders on and didn't notice much of anything else in Asia!

Thailand is not Africa! There is more room in Africa for elephants to roam freely! Many of the elephants in Thai wildlife sanctuaries, shows and training centers were born there. Or the baby elephants were rescued when the mother elephant was killed by trains and trucks.

When it comes to a Thai farmer choosing between protecting his crop and his family's livelihood or a marauding elephant - the elephant is going to lose! In a show or a sanctuary elephants are taken care of and attended to by veterinarians.

I can't ever remember having a need to buy ivory ever in my life! What do you do with the ivory of elephants who die in train and truck accidents or of natural causes in sanctuaries?

If you want to read about free roaming elephants dying in accidents Google it up. India always has elephants run over by trains or trucks. Sometimes several at one time when the herd is walking into the path of a speeding train!
