I don't think you will get that question on a visitors visa actually... just on a working holiday visa.

thank sam i am, i have been invited to stay with my fiance for 3 months and all i need is my flight, but i heard there had to be a minimum amout of funds i had to have

Not with the eVisitor. You just can't work, study for more than 3 months, have tuberculosis or a criminal conviction!

Hey Jim, I'll try and clarify the visas for you.

The EVisitor visa can be applied for online and is granted within a couple of days if not the same day. You do not have to show proof of funds. The visa is good for 12 months with a maximum of 3 months of each stay, and is free.

You can apply for a tourist visa if you intend to stay longer than 3 months but no more than 12 months, this requires evidence of funds, and costs about $250 to apply.

If you want to stay longer than the 3 months, but don't want to do the tourist visa, you can take a trip to NZ and then return to Aus for another 3 months still on a evisitor. And if you buy your ticket to NZ before you enter Aus, this also shows your onward flight which they will usually require.
