I bought a Greyhound pass for my trip up the East Coast which are pretty good as they allow you to get off as often as you like. I've just checked the and their pass between Sydney and Cairns is $389. I think this is what most travellers do and you'll meet other people in hostels to hang out with or to travel with.
I went greyhound as well and it was quite a bit cheaper than 1200 dollars, that's for sure Even Oz Experience wouldn't cost that much I don't think, and that includes a proper tour guide and accommodation if I'm not mistaken?
