Hey, myself and a mate are flying over to Melbourne mid-january next year, probably be staying in a hostel for the first 1-2 weeks, and then ideally looking to get a flat or possibly a house share for a couple of months, a couple of our mates are coming over in February for a few weeks and would be good to stay together somewhere cheapish, haven't researched this much but doesn't seem to be much on it apart from a few people mentioning 'house shares', basically my questions are...
bump
If it's only for a few weeks you might want to try couchsurfing or the flatshare section of Gumtree: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-flatshare-houseshare/melbourne/c18294l3001317. Though some could have trouble with short stays and extra guests...
There are some hostels in the Melbourne CBD but prices (for flats as well) tend to be better in the northern inner city suburbs. The area is well serviced by public transport so it won't take long to get in to the city or out to popular tourist areas like St Kilda. There's also a few good hostels in St Kilda, if you go that option.
Good luck!
I am planing to go CIC Melbourne ... Can you people suggest me a good hotel there... ?
Cheers Kellie, think it might just be best to look at Gumtree nearer the time!
Hiya, I'm travelling to Melbourne alone in January and staying with my sister in Toorak until I can find a house share. I'm looking at either St Kilda, Toorak or Fitzroy North. Add me on Facebook if you want it would be really cool to meet some new people on my travels :D http://www.facebook.com/jasmine.monrouxe
Hi!
You won't be able to rent your own flat, as a lot of paperwork is required and as a tourist you may not be able to fulfill the requirements to rent in Australia (job, several forms of identification, previous rental history...)
A great alternative is a house share/flat share, where people, who are already renting are subletting a room in their house. This is a great way to get to know the locals!
We have had a few travelers staying with us in the past. We have always advertised on , but the rental section on also offers rooms for rent.
Sometimes you need to commit to a minimum stay, but others are happy to fill the room just for a few weeks at a time.
Expect to pay around $150-$250 per room per week plus bills. The price will depend on the condition of the house, whether the room is furnished, location, etc. It is not uncommon to pay around $200 for a room per week, especially in Melbourne's inner city suburbs. Rent is usually paid every week. Some people require you to pay a bond, which is usually around the $500 mark. When you move out you will get your bond back (provided you didn't damage anything).
There are usually a lot of people advertising their spare rooms, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something. You might want to stay at a hostel for your first couple of days and inspect a few houses, but it shouldn't take long to find a room to rent somewhere.

Cheers escape for that info, found a site called House Share Vic which seems to be decent, got quoted $400 per week for a furnished twin room including all bills/Wifi, which would be $200 each, which might not be bad. Looks like it might not be as cheap as I originally thought though. I'll check out that real estate site. Jasmine I've added you on fb! .

I'm pretty out of date, but eight years ago I paid $100/week for a room in a half-furnished house in a pretty decent neighbourhood in Melbourne (plus maybe $40-50/month for bills?). So $400 now seems to be to be rather expensive to me. *googles a bit* Yeah, I see current prices of $150-$250 per week at flatmatefinders.com.au and flatmates.com.au. (Don't be focusing solely on furnished places. A cheap bed at ikea (or used) is easy to get, and if you stay for a couple of months, it'll make up the difference in no time. (Plus you could sell it on, too.))
