Europe

I'm 21 and looking to travel Europe via interail next summer, ill be staying in hostels is it wise to travel alone and is there anything tips I should know about thanks Ricky

It's perfectly fine to travel alone. People do it all the time.

  • Use your common sense
  • Don't flash your valuables around
  • Don't take anything with you that you can't afford to lose or damage
  • Budget more than you think you'll need
  • Pack less than you think you'll need
  • Have fun!

Make a realistic itinerary. Don't try to do too much and to visit too many places. Work out some kind of schedule so you make the best use of your time, looking at timetables so you don't get stuck in a railway station for hours or whatever.

Do check on train ticket prices and be aware that you may not always be quoted the cheapest price (especially in the UK where you can ask if there is a cheaper fare, and get it). If you get say a seven day rail pass, then try and fit as many trains as possible in that time or it may not be worth the money.

July and August is of course school holiday time when everywhere is crowded, prices go up and accommodation and transport fills up. May or June is better if you can manage it.

To avoid endless queues you can book rail, bus and attraction tickets online in a number of cases but you may need to print something off so see whether this is possible first.

The Accommodation link at the top of the page has lots of good hostels at different destinations. Try and pick somewhere near good public transport like an underground metro or bus station. Or train station.

Beware of pick pockets. They love the summer crowds of tourists. Get a money belt or whatever so make it difficult for them.

Travelling alone will be no trouble. Lots of others doing that all year around. Maybe you can pick up a companion on the way, for at least part of your trip.

As hinted at, take as much money as you can. Travel is expensive these days and so are many big cities.
