I’m stumped.
I have been wanton of travel for what like 3 years now? Me and a close friend had a great idea for travelling Europe with all the wheels in motion HOWEVER (as there is always a however) my travel partner dropped out on me and now I’m left in the lurch and was hoping for some advice.

To explain further, there are in general two types of travellers...
1.) New, inexperienced beginners who are very nervous about their first time on the road so they spend huge amounts of time/effort to hook-up with like minded people before they even leave home. Check out the travel companion branches on many travel forums... they're packed with first timers who are trying to find a comfort zone.
2.) Experienced travellers who either like being alone, answering to no one... or they know they'll also easily meet like minded people on the road to spend time with.
Bottom line, travel companions are NOT an issue one way or the other for most experienced travellers - these people know that if they want company it's everywhere on the road and easy to find. No big deal.

I'd say that if you are travelling with someone, then yes; who you travel with does make a hell of a difference.
In my case this has changed over the years from travelling with my parents, to travelling with friends to travelling with my partner to travelling with my kids. All are totally different experiences. You don't just do the things you would like to do when you are with someone else. So if you're travelling with someone who likes to do wildly different things, then that would get pretty awkward quite fast. A lot of people like to travel on their own so they don't have to make compromises.
What I like about having someone I know travel with me is the shared experience. 10 years later you will be able to reminisce together about your journey. You just have to be a flexible person.
I wouldn't worry too much about ending up "none the richer and a hell of a lot poorer" though. If this is new territory you are travelling and you're travelling with someone you like, I highly doubt it will be something you ever regret. There's not really any travel experiences I've had that I felt poorer for doing.

Agree 100%, but from my understanding that wasn't the OPer's query... he stated his fear that who he would choose as his travel companion would make or break the entire experience which is what I disagreed with because a permanent travel partner for the whole trip is NOT necessary by any measure. Two separate issues entirely...

Thanks both for your advice it was just what i was looking for and thanks also Peter for giving me a more rounded view as opposed to just answering the question has been infinitely helpful.
Seems were going to Europe and we will probably solo it because as Terry said its all about what happens not who your with, it also means no compromising though when i go that doesn't mean if i make some new friends ill be an arrogant self righteous fool to them, it just means i know what im going to do and do it, everything after that is bonus.
