Advice

Hello,
I want to travel south america this summer and I wanted to know the best route to do so as well as possible cost?
I have a budget of 4 grand spending money, will be out there for several months and staying in hostels or with friends.
Or does anyone have any useful advice for this?
I have travelled before doing the interrail across europe.

Flying is expensive in South America, even if booked months beforehand. Buses can take a very long time and a number of connections to get anywhere. The cheapest way flying between east and west is Buenos Aires and Santiago.

One problem in South America is petty theft, and more so if you are staying in very cheap hostels. Having your money in a number of locations helps if worse comes to worse and you are pick pocketed, or unlikely, even held up. You might look into prepaid credit cards. And think about insurance.

There are dangerous places in SA but they vary (maybe parts of Colombia, I have heard of armed robberies in Caracas but had no problem there myself, even Ecuador where mobs have strung up some thieves a while back, etc). It is not like travelling in Europe. It can sometimes be a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Essentially you need to plan where you want to go and what you want to see and do and that will give you some idea of your cost. For me, Peru has most things to see, and don't miss Lima out, as many do.

Once you have some idea of exactly what you want, you can then ask some questions on destinations and travel.

Thank you for replying.

Well we are starting in Santiago and travelling through Bolivia to Peru then onto Colombia and Venezeula. We want to then go on to Costa Rica and Mexico. Do you know of any good routes between these countries?

Is three months long enough to experience all these countries?

The time on the buses isn't a big issue as we would be trying to do overnight journeys etc.

Would it be easier to rent a car and drive between places ourselves? Or is that just a massive add on in terms of expense?

If you are planning to visit brazil pls let me know.
Buenos Aires does not have the same glamour anymore. be carefull with your things inside hotels.

If you have time i recommend Atacama Desert, it is cheap, beautifull and easy to get there.

Thanks for replying, we will definitely check out the Atacama desert. I am considering visiting brasil depending on budgeting, so if you have any advice I would appreciate it.

About Atacama Desert you can check the post about it in my blog!! I'm writing the second part of my trip!

About Brasil it depends on where are you planning to go?

Northeast - beaches and rest – best ones – Maceió ( I already had been there), Natal, Bahia (been there too), Maranhão.
Southeast - Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo – completely deferent trip proposals

The rest of the Brasil is not super touristic.

Let me know which cities are you thinking about and I can give you some tips.
