Hi there,

I am considering touring Indonesia before heading onto New Zealand sometime next year 2013, what would be the best route to work my way towards?

I'm thinking of flying into Jakarta and working my way to Bali and visit Lombok and then head onto New Zealand from there, is this the best route, if not can you suggest otherwise?

P.S there is no timeframe in place so I can come and go as I please.

Cheers

That sounds like a good route; I spent 2 weeks travelling from Jakarta to Bali and it was about the right amount of time, although I didn't have time for Lombok or the Gili Islands. Must see places are Borobudur, Prambanan and Mt Bromo (all in Java) and Ubud in Bali is worth a few days. Lovina is a nice beach town in Bali to chill out in after you've left Java, which is pretty hectic.

Well,, that's a nice route. But if you wanna visit sumatra, you can also start from Medan. And see the largest lake in Indonesia, Toba lake.
But if start from jakarta, that's okay tough.
I been in lombok before, beside gili, you can also visit Kuta Beach or Senggigi Beach. In Kuta Beach you can see the Nyale Festival that held every year.

i have been to indonesia and went to Bali, Lombok, Gili islands - also travelled around Java and went to Jakarta/Panganderan/Jogjakarta/Mount bromo/crater iljen.

wouldnt reccomend Jakarta to be completely honest. the mostquitos are a nightmare there too. panganderan is nice, and you can do real local tours there too, we were took on motor bikes with locals who took us around their village, jumping from waterfalls etc - brilliant experience but it does take a while to get there.

jogjakarta is really for borobuder and prambanan (sp) but if your not into temples, its a little boring. not a great deal there.

mount bromo is amazing. crater iljen is also amazing. couldnt explain how good a time we had for both. long walking though!

i didnt like Bali but im sure if you explore a little more it would be great. Lombok is absolutely beautiful if you hire a scooter. and gili is also a great experience. dont be put off when people sayd Gili Trawanagan is a 'party' island. from my experience, one bar was open until around 12pm

if you need any help with anything else, let me know.

i would have liked to explore flores but didnt have the time.

how long do you have?

Hi,
West Java is really beautiful and off the beaten track as most travellers never spend much time there.
Check out where you have the chance to live in a local village of Cianjur and really get a feel of Java.
Have visited the area many times over the years and it still remains one of my favourites in Java.
Pamela.
