Best of luck to you. It takes a certain kind of person to travel to India and enter on a path of enlightenment. And to be honest most of those people are self indulgent, egotistical, asshats. And no amount of time in ashrams and chanting will ever change them. If you want to find inner piece or a spiritual awakening, it has NOTHING to do with where you physically are. Save your money, and start looking right now for those things, where ever you are.

Anyhow even if you're visiting India, certainly you are not required to go to Himalaya for inner peace.
Well certainly visit places like Varanasi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kerala, Madurai, Rameshwaram etc.
Only a true teacher can help you with the Spiritual Awakening and not by visiting places around in the world.
Varanasi, Rishikesh and Haridwar as mentioned are the most holely places. Where in the Himalayas would you go?
Try heading out into the Ladakhi mountains.
Most of the sadhus, gurus and yogis in India are self-proclaimed special people and totally crap.
You have a greater chance of finding inner peace in the quiet, enchanting mountains of Ladakh.
Try visiting less-traveled places like Turtuk, Dha Hanu and Sarhchu!
