I just got back from Australia this month. I was only there for a couple weeks but I saw most of the West Coast (Perth, Coral Bay, Monkey Mia, etc.) while I was there. I am also planning on returning to Australia in either April/May 2013 or September 2013 (Still deciding...) for a year to work and travel.
From what I've seen (and yes, my view of the country was somewhat limited due to time), Australia is absolutely amazing and very welcoming. You will love it. Even as a female, traveling alone is very safe and you'll probably have a better time traveling alone then you would with someone else because there is so much to do and so many people around all the time. I did a tour when I was there and the tour was nice because it took care of arranging travel, hostels, etc. for me, and introduced me to a lot of people on the tour, but you can definitely do without it.
The only advice I can offer on backpacking, as I haven't done a long backpack trip yet, is to pack light. Pack what you feel you need to survive and then throw half of it out. Australia is an advanced country so anything you need, you can buy there.

Hey Katie,
I'm thinking about starting in Sydney because that seems to be the cheapest route to fly into the country. I'm still investigating that though. I'm so drawn to the west coast, it's going to be hard to stay on the busy east coast! Where are you thinking about starting?
