How much money to i initally need to go to Australia!?

Hi All,

4000 pounds is about AUD $6000. At an average minimalistic budget of AUD $75/day (hostel/food/transport), this'll last you about 2.5 months - maybe three months for you since you already have paid for transport; and you could make it last quite a bit longer still if you know for certain that you'll stick around in Brisbane for work and find a house share right away, rather than staying in a hostel. (Alternatively, if staying in a hostel, inquire about doing cleaning work in exchange for your bed for the night; hostels frequently need this, and prefer people who intend to stick around for more than 3 weeks.)
So, generally speaking, it sounds like you should be just fine, assuming you'll find work within the first few weeks. Do keep a close eye on what you're actually spending during those first five weeks (going out regularly can easily double (or more) how much money you're spending - and oz experience does have a bit of the party reputation, plus they will undoubtedly be upselling all kinds of expensive activities to you).

Hey Sophie,

I’m going to Brisbane in July my tickets booked for the 14th July!

I’m going to stay in or around Queensland until the weather gets warmer! Then I think I’ll look at heading down to Sydney for Nye and then on to Melbourne. Hopefully if I get enough work beforehand I’ll take the entire summer off!

I should have about the same budget I think, I would have though the trick it not to go so mad until you get a bit of work. Looking on line a room somewhere should work out cheaper than hostels.

Do you have fb?

James

Ahh ok thats for that!...

Hi James...

Ahh wicked we mght cross paths at some point then - thats preitty much my plan. What do you mean a room? like a house share? How does that work?

Yeah i have fb but im private so ill haev to add you whats your fb name? Im well looking forward to it !! Stay in touch! Im trying to get chattin with as many people as i can before i go.

what kind of work you lookin for? xxx

p.s ill be in Brisbane on the 28th of August james

Yeah that sounds good! If you looking on Gumtree they have specific pages you can get something all in for like $130 per week, live with other travellers etc. think you might have to pay a couple of weeks deposit but I would have thought it would work out cheaper.

I’m staying with my cousin when I first get there so I’m hoping he will help me out a little! Work wise I have a few ideas as I’m not bringing the most money I’ll go for whatever pays the best, I work in recruitment at the moment but didn’t want to work inside if I can help it.

I’ve written two CV’s so hopefully something will come along. Something that will sign off my second year would be a bonus. Ideally building work/or landscaping falling that bar/restaurant or even farming/fruit picking.

Try searching my name I have the same profile pic as well so should be easier James Mclean.

Ahh ok kool ...yeah it would work out cheaper!

aAot of places offer accomodation, food on duty and 250 dollars a week which would be preitty cool cause once you got a roof over your head and food on the table any other money you earn is just for having fun!

Im just worried about being caught short - money wise! i have an aunty that lives in Brisbane so I may stay with her for the first week or so! ...

yeah im going to write aload of CVs and things before i go and just hand them out anywhere and everywhere! i Need to get my RSA certificate for bar work before i go.

are you going alone? Im well nervous about going alone! im going out with a girlfreind initally but then shes going home on the 29thj of August and ill be going solo!

Yeah ill add you xxx

I wouldn’t be so worried it can’t be that hard as so many people in the forums I’ve looked at have gone over with next to nothing! Money wise I mean some people take £1000 or less!

You will be fine, like I said would be best to go steady until you get yourself sorted with a job or something. There’s potential to earn a lot more than that, I have friends in Sydney that were earning $1200 per week!

Yes I’ll be all alone, I’m pretty sure that won’t last as I said there are so many people in the same situation that are looking for people to travel with. I’m just in two minds about getting a car as all the adverts for jobs I’ve seen have said that you must have your own car…!

Oh about the RSA I think it’s a lot cheaper to get it when you’re actually in Oz or so I have red. They are more expensive if you get it whilst in England so it might be worth waiting...:S

Unfortunately it's not at all uncommon to see those same people posting again a month or two later all sad because they couldn't immediately find a job, ran out of money and had to return home. We really strongly advice those people to not go with that little money; the official minimum for a WHV is AUD $5000 - because experience from the Australian government has shown that the vast majority of backpackers will need at least that much in order to do okay. And sure, some people make it with far less - but the odds are against them.

It was more of a reassurance comment just to be clear – I understand the requirements of the visa just wanted to put some perspective on the budget situation!
