I’m going to South Korea soon and I want to sample some unique Korean food, can anybody recommend things they’ve eaten?
Ok South Korean food is amazing, I’ve eaten a ton of it, if you want to eat some really unique food then some of my personal favorites are;
Live Octopus (Sannakji) – They cut up the tentacles of a live octopus and serve it immediately, they usually serve it with a light seasoning of sesame oil. This is a really unique experience because the tentacles are still squiring, when you poke them with your chopsticks they will start moving all over the plate and when you put them in your mouth be warned because the suckers still work so they will stick to the side of your mouth and your tongue when you put them in your mouth. Make sure you chew them a lot before swallowing.
Cow’s Stomach(Gopchang) – Each of the 4 cow stomachs are separately named dishes, unfortunately I’ve forgotten their individual names, but they are all quiet delicious. The 3rd stomach is by far the best, so I’d go for that one. They can be a little pricey though.
Dog Meat Soup (Bosintang) – Now this one is a bit of a moral dilemma, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want to try it you can find it quite easily in Korea. To be perfectly honest it isn’t that great of a meal, it has a weak beef flavor in my opinion. It’s something you eat so that you can say you’ve tried it.
I really like (Pork and Kimchi stew)
I bought the - it's very good (food and travel in S. Korea)
Thanks for the advice guys!
When I was last there, I fell in love with the BBQ miracle called "samgyeopsal." Possibly the best BBQ pork I've eaten in my life (and it's everywhere!).
Also, try the side-of-the-road food stall specialties like:
"hoddeok" (cinnamon and nut-filled sweet pancakes)
"kimbap"(savory meat and veggies rolled in rice & seaweed, similar to Japanese norimakizushi)
"sundae" (pronounced soon-day), Korean "blood" sausage (doesn't sound appetizing, but it's really tasty: glass noodles cooked in sausage tubing).
"beondegi" (pronounced "bun-deh-ki"), steamed silkworm chrysalis simmered in soy sauce. They taste like a cross between flowers and starch. Hard to explain. But you can say you ate insect larvae!).
"kimchi mandu" (kimchi and pork-filled steamed dumplings. YUM!)
"samgyetang" (a whole boiled chicken stuffed with rice, ginseng, jujubes and pine nuts. Really comforting like Mom's chicken soup).
"mul nemyung" (cold potato-starch noodles in a sharp, clear broth, topped with kimchi, cucumber, apple slices and egg. The locals often order this soup to go with their BBQ kalbee beef, often dipping the sizzling meat into the soup to cool it down and cut the grease).
"Dakkangjeong" Extremely popular and addictive deep-fried chicken wings covered in a sweet, spicy sauce.
"dulsot bibimbap" Mixed rice, veggies and meat cooked in a hot stone bowl
You're gonna have a great time!
I loved bibimbap!
Two Things You MUST try :
- Samgyeopsal (Pork Belly, somewhat like bacon)
- Tteokbokki (Spicy rice cake)
Also I look at this site a lot to see what's out there in Seoul. -snip-
