After backpacking a year in Australia me and my boyfriend are planning to stay a months (June) in Asia. We defenetly want to spent some days in Malaysia. From there it would be easy to go to Sumatra as it is so near.
We would like to use this months to relax, see nice beaches, snorkel, do some surfing, enjoy life etc.
My Question is: Is Sumatra the right place for us? We don t have any asia Backpacking experiences and are surfing beginners. I have heard most of the waves in Sumatra are quite big... and dangerous for beginners? (We don t want to book a course because we do not have enouph budget for this).
Do you think Sumatra is fine or would you suggest another place for us as total asia backpacker newbies with not a lot of time left?

Suggest you give surfing a miss because there are major rips in Indonesia and being inexperienced could land you in a lot of trouble.
Being in Singapore - maybe you should just opt for Bali - quite western but with the Balinese culture - sounds like it would be the best for you both.
Sumatra is more about jungle trekking, long arduous bus rides, etc apart from surfing which is definitely for the experienced.

I would recommend Bali, its a lot safer for tourists and lots nicer. My parents have been to Sumatra and liked it but said that now its very dangerous for tourists. Not sure about surfing in Sumatra but all round I would recommend Bali or even Lombok.
If you like beautiful lake, jungle rain forest, and untouristique places with kind local peoples, then Sumatra is a perfect destination
For surfing better jump to Bali or Mentawai island in West Sumatra. Beautiful beach for diving and snorkeling in Weh island in Aceh northern part of sumatra.
About the danger for tourist, i think everywhere you go around the world you are in danger. So it depends how update your info about that local place, your attitude and how lucky you are. Find yourself there. Asia peoples mostly kind answering you if asking them questions. Good luck! btw, i had good moment also with them -snip-

In the end we decided to go to Malasya and Thailand.
I really want to see Indunesia but I just realized that its not worth trying to do it in a months.
So we decided to use this trip more as holidays rather than real backpacking.
But I m hoping to find some time and money to do a real indunesia trip once in the future
