4 Months in SE Asia

Hi everyone,
Im hoping to travel around Asia in july next year for about 4 months with my boyfriend. I would like to go from Bali up through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Ive been to all these places before so know where I want to go, but have always gone with family. Ho much do you all think that it would cost 2 people for 4 months? We are used to cheap so wouldnt mind anything and arent expecting much when it comes to food, accommodation etc. If anyone could let me know how much I might need, I would appreciate it, or anywhere off the beaten track that I could go would be great.

If you know where you go, what you do,… you must know how much you need for your traveling =]] nobody can answer your question. Funny!

From Bali, consider going through Java and Sumatra. You have ample time and there is quite a lot to see on the way. Then a plane from Medan to Singapore and then up through Malaysia.

How much? As much money as you can get. If you have money left over, you can get a cheapish flight somewhere else, by Air Asia and the like.

July however is the rainy season in many of those countries. November onwards would be better and a lot drier.

There is a normal package route from Singapore to Malaysia by road, from there by air to Bangkok. It is cheap.

There is a train that goes from Singapore to Thailand. From the bottom of Thailand all the way up to Northern Thailand. Buses will be cheaper though. When on buses and trains always keep your valuables, passport and money with you and not in any bag out of sight! (Any country!)

So many countries means you must research your visa requirements. Some countries with NZ passport you can enter for free. Some you may have to buy a visa ahead of time or at least on arrival. Different countries different rules. Not all countries are the same for costs. Singapore more expensive than other countries.

If you can't come up with enough money to stay in places where you have a little privacy and running water maybe don't be gone for so long! You can always return when you have more money in the future.

Research how you would get from Bali to Malaysia. For some destinations you may want to fly, even if it is a discount airline, just to save time and wear and tear on your bodies. Know how to handle you money when on the road. Walking around with 10,000 dollars in your pocket while staying in crappy shared dorms might not be as that secure.

Buy or borrow from your library a Lonely Planet Travel Guide, maybe a Moon TG too and look at the locations for the places you want to visit. Don't be afraid to use simple Google checks for questions on how to get from (here) to (there) type questions. Then do more research to verify that the info is still accurate.

At the end of 4 months, just the two of you - day after day, hour after hour, minute after minute always in the other person's face - you may have a stronger relationship or hate each other!

Consider a shorter trip maybe Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam first. You can use round trip to Bangkok and visit nearby countries overland then return to Bangkok. (Round trip may be cheaper than buying 2 one way flights. Always do the math when purchasing plane rides!)
