if you live in the uk i used moneysupermarket.com to purchase my travel insurance
when putting in dates of how long you are traveling you can put it up to 18months. 12 to 18 months is usually the same price.
I'm with alpha backpacker 60 on the list. I've actually had to claim on medical bills as i got dengue fever in Thailand. What i did was notify them that I was ill so it was on record. when i got home i sent them all the hospital receipts. I got all my money back minus the excess.
all the policies are different. you need to think about what activities you will be doing.
You are in the UK - there is little reason to look further than collators like the already advised moneysupermarket.
