Photo order

Hi,

To me, the ordering of photos in the right sidebar of is exactly the same as the ordering of your photos in .

Photos are always ordered first by date (most recent date first), and then for the same date, by upload order (last uploaded first). Renaming them wouldn't change anything about that, unfortunately. (Although I'm not actually certain how the "my photos" photo management interface orders photos by default, and I suspect it's for that view which you've been renaming?)

More control over how photos are ordered/displayed is a long-standing request. I don't know how high up this is in the priority list for the admins at this point. Different people unfortunately have vastly different expectations of how this should work, so it's definitely far from trivial to "just" make it better. :/

In the My Photos area you can sort the table using any of the headers at the top. This is purely a convenience for finding photos quickly in that view.

The default photo gallery view is by the date of the photo (most recent first) followed by the time it was uploaded.

Like Sander said, it is a popular request to have photo albums work differently to this, but unfortunately it is also a very significant change and requires time allocated to it. Time that is currently being spent on lots of other things.

I understand, but in theory, you want the photos to coincide with the text. It would be nice if the order of the photos in my public gallery would match the order in which they appear on my private photo management.

Here's my vote fr pushing this up on the list of priorities :-).

Thanks.

Do you mean coincide between the sidebar of your blog and the text of the blog? (If not, you can ignore the rest of this post.)
If so, that's not what the sidebar is intended for. Those same eight photos show on every single blog entry; they're just an entrance point for the visitor to your public photo gallery; not at all intended to match up with what you write in the main column. There you can insert individual photos (in larger formats) to illustrate the text. To do this, when writing a blog entry, click on the little rectangular lightblue "Picture" icon in the toolbar just above the textarea where you write the blog text. That will open a new window, from which you can insert one of your photos into your blog text, and that way visitors to your blog will be able to see the photo exactly where you want it to appear (and so the ordering of your photos in your gallery won't matter). If that ends up being what you want, you can even remove the small square photos from the right-hand column altogether.

I understand how the sidebar works and it's a nice feature. It's just that I really would not have chosen those elephant photos to be there, but I understand that it's the date saved in the exif file that counts.

I might try inserting photos in the text, but i thought that would make the entry too long, but perhaps I'll try it next time. I prefer the idea of clicking on the gallery after you've read the text.

Thanks.

Ah OK, I hadn't realised you were trying to sync up the sidebar with the content. I can see how it would make sense when you're looking at individual posts to maybe only see photos from that time period.

I would definitely encourage you to insert photos inside the content. Most of the blog entries that get a good response are doing this. People just like seeing the context of the photo immediately and photos also have a nice way of breaking up a big block of text . Have a look at for an example of how nicely photos can work inside blog entries. These are really more photo essays than anything, but they are really quite enjoyable to look through / read. You might not feel the need for quite so many photos, but at least a few of your best ones in an entry can definitely bring it to life.

Tracey's blog looks nice. Will try inserting pics on the next entry.

Thanks for all the very prompt feedback!
