Malaria tablets

Hi guys,

Really it is better to be sure and take them (for the full period before and after). Pop into Boots for advice.

But many don't bother. I was in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap early this year and did not bother, and did not get bitten. The real danger is the jungle and not so much in towns.

Going out in the evening, cover up. I buy some mosquito spray and as well as doing my room before settling down for the night, I will have a quick spray on arms and legs when going out in the evening, particularly ankles which mosquitoes seem to love.

Hi Mollie,
I went to Vietnam and Cambodia last year and did not take malaria medication. As long as you are not in the midst of the jungle, i think you would be fine! Definitely bug repellent though!

I pick up Doxycycline from Thai pharmacies. Roughly 3 to 10 baht per capsule depending on where it is made. Check with your own doctor if this is something you can use. This has to be better than nothing! I think it is about 49 baht to the UK pound. Even 10 baht per capsule is cheap!

Locals and long term expats come down with malaria every now and then. Dengue Fever is also a problem in some areas too.

Up to you.
