Hi one and all
This is an interesting one, as although I'm more than happy travelling alone, I do sometimes find that I'm at a bit of a loose end in the evenings. I'm not into clubbing etc and wouldn't do that alone anyway, so I often eat alone at a restaurant and then read or watch tv in my hotel or hostel. In hostels it's often easier to meet people to hang out with in the social areas or to go out for dinner with, but in hotels this rarely happens. Recently I've done a group tour and although I'd rather not do these as I prefer to travel alone, it did mean that I normally had people to hang out with in the evenings which was nice.
Ye, also like my own space and company and whatnot, but is different when you are busy in the day with things to do and attractions open, than at night.
Will bear in mind about the hostel social areas. Thanks for the response
HI
I typed this into Google 'things to do alone at night in paris' & got 21 million hits.
But a female travelling alone might not want to walk around Paris, or any other city, at night! We're not suggesting there's nothing to do at nights, more that lots of things are less accessible or suitable at night.
I wasn't aware this was just about females or just about walking. Just mentioning things to do at night alone. Paris was just by the way. It could be any place.
That google query turned up this one that has something I had not heard of - restaurants with communal dining.
could be interesting.
I'm the same when travelling alone – I normally spend the whole day walking and visiting sights, eat at a restaurant in the mid to late evening and then head back to my accommodation to hang out. If I'm in a hostel I spend a bit of time in the common areas, reading, watching TV, or chatting to others and then get online to plan my next day's activities.
Just realised that doesn't sound very exciting in terms of night activities! But I try to apply common sense when travelling alone in unfamiliar places.
Summer can mean later and more relaxed nights, and I would suggest heading to any community events or festivals that are happening.
Interesting thread,
I always travel alone, and even as a solo guy(i'm not exactly a pushover), some places are not the most desirable locations to be bouncing about on your own late at night. I do enjoy a beer or 2 though, (not clubbing either really), so i normally eat early (ish), maybe 7pm and go to a bar/pub aferwards, a couple of drinks is long enough usually to find some company or decide to head back to where you are staying. You can always substitute bar for a nice street cafe, which are usually synonamous with most European cultures.
Another option is, if you are staying somewhere for 2 or 3 days, make dinner/evening plans with other travellers, plenty of other (especially single) tourists are in the same boat. I frequently make dinner/evening plans with fellow backpackers, both male and female, there is some truth to the old saying safety in numbers.
All the normal rules apply, use taxis, do not venture into unlit areas and use common sense, i find most people around the world are really really nice, i'm sure you will have a blast.
Best of luck.
