AUD $9000 could last you nearly four months if you watch your budget (counting backpacker travel style of small dorm rooms in decent quality hostels, cooking your own meals, and travelling by public transport; excluding going out at night or doing organized activities).
I'm generally a fan of YHA hostels; I like that they tend to have a more diverse range of travellers (with both children and people aged 60 or above being regular sights), are more quiet (I'm just not the type for party hostels), and have good minimum standards for cleanliness and facilities. In Sydney I used to be a big fan of the , which is not nearly as large as the other flagship YHAs, and has a lot of character, plus is set in the wonderfully bohemian neighbourhood of Glebe. (I say I used to be a big fan, as the last time I visited, cleanliness had gone quite a bit downhill, and the kitchen was rather badly understocked. So now I'm just a fan.)
I found to be somewhat impersonal, but absolutely top-notch facilities, and absolutely excellent location if you're arriving late or having to leave early. (Right next to Wake Up! and only beaten out by the railway square YHA which is actually 'inside' the train station.)
Good for you! I did something similar in 2005 with only $5000 USD...so even less! I ended up being able to stretch it out by doing things like WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) and helpx.net (it was all free back when I did it).
I had great experiences and it was a nice change than just doing tourism stuff. You got to know people and it was really "life rewarding" so to say. I did also do touring, of course. But it helped saved loads of money and I never got a job.
Good luck!
