What makes you want to travel the world?

Hi all,

I agree with everything you say - I couldn't have put it better myself! x

I want to travel because I want to see the different culture around. It's like we're so different but so much the same all at once. There are more to cultures than just about being a race. I love the Asian culture, most especially. Very diverse but very enriching.

You know what's so surprising about this 'old' world we have?? it's that sense of discovering 'new' things everyday, despite...

i dream of traveling the world too. a dream i believe will never depart my senses until i'm able to do so. i may find it difficult for now and i may have my own fears upon it but i know i'm gonna do it anyway...

i want to travel... i guess because i'm bored with my current life. i need a breath of fresh air. i want to see people. i want to live their lives. i want to speak their tongue. i want to eat their food. i want to play their games. i want to do everything they do so differently from what i do. so many things i want i can never tell much more...

i've dreamt of Egypt as one perfect destination. curious and enchanting ... i like!

by the way, @paulmacpaul, you definitely should try Asia...

I want to travel because I'm eager to know the different culture around. The culture we don't get from our books. I love the Asian culture, most especially, like Chinese culture. Very diverse but very enriching. I know much about Chinese embroidery,

So far, people travel because they are in a word, curious. They want to know other cultures and our differences. You will find those differences if you search for it and in the process, you might fail to see how this so called differences is just an illusion.

Anyway, why would I want to see the world.

1. Because I have dreams that can only be fulfilled in certain societies. I write poetry and I paint, and art in the 3rd world don't sell like pancakes.

2. I like meeting people from different races and culture. People who know how defy their backgrounds to make friends with people that so different from them.

3. Because I am don't have a housing loan, children, a 9 to 5 job, and so I might as well do something great with my time, celebrate my independence.

That puts the "curiosity" argument out of my top 5 reasons.

A lot of people travel, but I doubt if they really know why they do so.

I can philosophize about all the reasons I travel, but the truth is, I travel for the thrill of it. Because life on the road is never dull or routine (at least, not for long). My favourite reasons to travel:

1) Going to a place I saw in a movie, or a history book: a place where history actually happened. It's such a thrill to be standing in Athens, on the spot where Socrates debated and Paul preached. Where the Battle of Thermopylae was planned. Although the places which seem so large and grand in our imagination are often smaller in real life.

2) Going somewhere far away from 'the madding crowd'. I love the wilderness. Although I live in China now, I grew up in northern Canada, and sometimes I just need to get away from people, people, people!

3) The Road is my hometown. I grew up in a nomadic family, moving every couple of years, so I feel uncomfortable staying in one place too long. I get 'itchy feet'. Just being on the road, travelling, I feel freer.

"What lies ahead
I have no way of knowing,
but under my feet
the grass is growing.
Yeah, it's time to move on,
it's time to get going..."
