first time travelling

hey guys!

Hi David,

I can't help you as far as getting around as I've never been to Australia. Others will have advice for you.

I can say you will meet people - if for no other reason than you are on a 'working visa' which means looking for work. You have to talk to people when trying to find a job.

As for others in your group not traveling, you will be staying somewhere at night. Don't hide in your room or behind a book. If it's a hostel, go to the common area. You may be a shy person but, just being physically in an area where there are other people allows them to make contact with you. A simple "hello" has created some great friendships for us when we've least expected it.

Other people have posted their same 'fears' about the same subjects. So far, I haven't seen one come back and say they didn't make any type of acquaintances. More often than not, they are overwhelmed with the number of people they meet without even trying.

I've move this thread to the Australia Forum so people can answer your 'getting about' question.

Just go with the flow - or as my best friend now says "flow with the go".

okay thanks

allot for the advice. i think i just have it in my head that there wont be anyone else there since its winter and so cold and i'll be the only one there haha

I doubt that - the 'anyone there and so cold' thing. Come to Illinois in the winter and you'll see people still show up here. Winter is just a matter of perspective depending on your native location. What's cold for one may be t-shirt weather for me and many other people traveling.

haha okay well i'm going to look more into it and see if i can make a plan of action!

Don't worry, there are plenty of people around in winter. Backpackers largely come on a 12 month visa and a lot of them make use of the full 12 months. And June is holiday period in the northern hemisphere, so a lot of people come then because that's when they have a few weeks off.

There are certain parts of the country that are more popular at different times of year too. It being colder in the south of Australia during July, the north is where a lot of people go that time of year.

Then again, if you want to find work and are looking for the kind of work that all the other backpackers would want as well, then maybe going somewhere a little less crowded will be a bonus

Finally, in case you have any intentions of being in Sydney for New Years (almost everyone does it seems ) - be aware that you should book that accommodation now! It gets booked up a long, long time in advance and your options will become very limited the closer you get.

Hey David Im in the same boat, 24 and got a WHV, staring in Sydney next month.

I have my first 4 nights sorted with STA, then just gonna take it from there, no solid plans yet. im not really that outgoing either when i first meet people but like others have said im sure it will be fine!

Im going in winter, as in my blind optimism i think it will be quieter and easier to find work also ease me into OZ summer !!!!

I looked at travelling which seems to be pretty easy on the east coast, by bus - look at greyhound - internal flights seem reasonable check out virginblue and jet star.

I go June 12 - if you coming later and want any advice before give me a shout or if you fancy meeting up! ?

Lee

hey lee

yeah i just changed my ozintro starter week to the 4th of july so i'll be in sydney for a little longer than planned but thats no big deal!

do you have any idea where you plan to travel to once there or do you have any coach tickets booked? i saw a company that sells a 12month pass thing for maybe like 300 pounds and you can get on and off the coaches to anywhere you want as many times as you want.
ive not properly looked into it but may be worth looking at something similar?

yeah i'd love to meet up if we'rein the same area at the same time! do you have facebook or anything?
