It all depends on if you want to see the country-side or not. If you plan to stop along the way and get off the train/bus then do that, it's fun and worth it in some places... However if you want to see the countryside out the train window then it's not worth it. Sometimes plane tickets are cheaper than trains in China, especially for domestic flights. For example, going to Hong Kong, it's cheaper (50% cheaper or more..) to fly to ShenZhen/Guangzhou and take a bus to the Hong Kong border, than it is to fly directly to Hong Kong.

Oh good question....I'm doing just that. Flying into Beijing 25 October with 2 other TP peeps I met on this site and our intention is to travel all the way down to Singapore taking in Laos,Cambodia,Thailand etc too by either bus/train or plane.Haven't planned it yet but wondering is it a bit much to plan this before we get there. I'm guessing it's best to wing it and decide once we get there but open to ideas.
Would like to take the odd tour but also go out of the usual route to see the real Asia - if that makes sense.
