New years in Cape Town

So as I travel I hear nothing but wonderful things about SA and cape town in particular. I live in the mountains and December it is very cold, so now I'm thinking if I could get to SA that would be much better. I'm sure it will be peak season, and more expensive during the holidays. I figured I could save and splurg about $3000 on a ticket down there from new York. But how much should I budget for 10-14 days with this being over NYE. arriving on the 26, 27 or so....

hi, happy to see that you are looking to visit sunny South Africa

Cape Town is an amazing place to visit, you could do the city in maybe 5 days, there are many stunning beaches to laze, mountains to hike, coffee shops to people watch and wine route to drive and get abit tipsy

i would highly recomend hiring a car and driving along the garden route, this is stunning, on the route you can find amazing cango caves, stop off at knysner and maybe be there in time for the oyster festival, plett is also a must see. my favorite is Titsikama, but youll need to book in advace if you want to stay at the log cabins here, other wise there is a day pass that you can swim at there beach and snorkel (keep an eye out for baby hammer head sharks). not far from there is the highest bridge in the southern hemisphere where you can bundgi jump - Bloukrans river bridge this trip i would estimate an easy 5 -6 days

i am from Johannesburg - if i had 10 - 14 days in south africa, i would only be in the cape region. Johannesburg is a city. there are amazing places that one can visit around the city like sun city casino, drakensburg, and Clarens. what are you looking for when traveling to south africa? our country is vast from deserts on the west to forrest in the centre to stunning endless beaches on the east coast like cape vidal.

December is our holiday season so be prepared as us joburg folk all go to the coast for holiday, be it cape town to durban. book in advance !

cash wise it all depends on how you travel ...

*snip*

enjoy

well it would be 10-14 because the price for a flight there is very expensive from NY. my budget is usually $15-40 a night for accomodations, but at the same time I want to stay somewhere nice. If I had .. and I would expect during NYE, I could pay up to $75 but that is very much, even for my budget.

as for food, I eat what is cheap. I like cafes, street food, and local market stalls.

for tours around the area, I would not like them to be over $50-$100 US for a full day, unless cage diving with sharks.

Thanks for the info about johannesburg. is it easy to travel to the beaches of mozambique for realtively cheap? how far is that from cape town? is it safe? and also what about victoria falls? Not too sure what there is in zimbabwe otherwise.

your prices are reasonable, just remember prices will go up in december for our holiday season.

with regards to tours i think i was quoted by the shark cage company and it was roughly $150 - 300. email them, they are very quick with there responce.

mozambique beaches are very far from cape town, and if you wish to drive there you will need a 4x4 car. mozambique on price wise is dirt cheap, especially there sea food as for zimbabwe i would not go there to see the falls as it is not safe, but you can see the falls from the Botswana side.

there are also places in botswana to see the big 5 animals, but here the accomidation is directed to american and european tourist so prices are much higher.
