Hi
I'm planning on going to Australia on a working holiday visa I will be going on my own and it will be my first time traveling.
I want to know how easy it is to get work. I'm a little worried I will struggle and have to come home when my funds run out.
I was also thinking of doing fruit picking then I can stay 2 years if I wanted to is farm work hard to get?
Any advice will be much appreciated and also any other backpacking info would be great too
Thanks
I don't know how difficult it is to get farm jobs someone else might be able to answer your question. However in terms of it being a struggle getting work, it really depends where you are thinking of staying. Places like Darwin, Sydney Melbourne it should be quite easy (Darwin is great for backpackers too there are a lot of them and easygoing vibe).
Lots of other people with the same idea of getting work there including unskilled migrants in the country. Unless you have a particular skill needed, I would not count of finding work in Australia, and if you do, it will be hard work for little pay.
Youth unemployment in Australia is at a nine year high, and they will be looking at similar jobs to you.
Es87 I was planning to travel up the east coast and try to do my 3 months farm work on the way so I can earn travel money as I go and also work towards my 2nd year visa. Then I think I want to live in Sydney for the rest of my time there. I don't have any skills but would be happy to anything as long as I could afford to live.
Cyberia you've scared me a little now is really that bad?
Cyberia has a good point. Un-employment is pretty much the case for many Australians at the moment. Skilled or unskilled. But as I said before, in big cities you will be fine! Probably hospitality is your best bet My friends who moved to Melbourne from the UK had no troubles at all finding work in bars so I assume it would be much the same in Sydney. Someone else might have a good idea about farm work but I do hear of foreigners doing that.
Ok well thanks for the help think I might just go for it can always get a flight home if it comes to that
If you need employment i have contact which hire's a lot of backpackers,
Its sales based job minimal hours in Sydney or Newcastle,
Average pay $850p/w but last week i made $1600
