hi everyone, i am looking for a bit of advice as to whether i should quit my job and go travelling or not.
i am 25 year old male and have a good job as an engineer in telecoms. i am worried that i am too old to give this up and just go off round east asia, australia, and south america for a year or two. i went travelling for 5 months round australia when i was 18 and have had the bug ever since and said i would definitely do some more travelling for a longer period of time when i was a bit more mature. however after getting a job and a girlfriend etc. it kind of got knocked on the head. i have saved a lot of money and was going to put a deposit on a house and just thought arrgghh i'm not ready for this. i am now single, no children no commitments and just think if there’s any time to do it now would be it! i think if i didn't i may end up regretting it the rest of my life. i am just paranoid about coming back age 27 and not being able to find a job. i've read a lot on the forums about people going off travelling in their mid-twenties but they are all uni graduates with degrees to fall back on when they return. i don’t have a degree just 5 years engineering experience. it’s not exactly the broadest field like electrician say and jobs are hard to come by but i think i've invested enough time into it that i should try and stick to that field. my dad has a great job and has been very successful through hard work and determination and i respect him loads. he would support me always except to him the idea of quitting a good job to do no job is totally incomprehensible and i feel i would be letting him down. i think his generation though have pensions etc. and save to do these things when they retire whereas all that’s changing now. i reckon my generation will be working until they die ha. anyway thanks in advance to anyone who has took the time to read this post and can offer any thoughts on the matter.

my advice would be go 4 it! do the travelling wile you have no commitments because you ll never be able to do it then! im in the same boat as you and every one tells me to go 4 it so am telling you the same lol.
about work, yeah theres lots of graduates with degrees to fall back on when they get back but doesnt mean they are garanteed a job. you have years of experience you will have no trouble getting a job but i wouldnt even worry about that. keep your options open because who knows where you end up and what opportunitys you may come across while your travelling.

Hi, My partner and I have just booked a 6 month trip. I am 29 he is 34 and we both have jobs and a house but we are giving it all up to go travelling. We are renting the house and I've handed in my notice. This is something we have wanted to do for a long time and this time we are not letting it pass. Just go for it whilst you have the money and inclination to do it.

Agreed. If you think its time to go and have no commitments then GO! or you may regret it later. I'm travelling on an itinerary I should have done 2 years ago.
As for work, you need to talk to your supervisor. You never know. I figured I would quit for the summer but when I asked for 3 months off, I got it.
And for quitting, and finding a new job .... well I will be 28 in 2 days, and have not yet stated a career. I was smart enough to start investing at the age of 20. I would say with your experience you should be able to find a job when you get home. Is the US experience is more valuable than a degree right now. Have you thought about working abroad? Even for a short time, and it could add something to your CV.
I always have to have a little chuckle when someone who is in their 20's thinks they are too old! I'm 31 and quitting my well paid, respectful job to go travelling. I've realised how unhappy I have been just living a predictable and secure life. Yes i'm nervous that I'll have to come back to no job, no money and living back with my parents, but who cares?!
If you think you're too old to take a year or two out from your career at 25, that will only worsen as you get older and get 'tied down', and even with stuff like age restrictions on some visas. It's great that you're looking at things practically, but take the leap!!
is there no chance your company will give u a sabeatical?? i work for ford motor company in the UK, and they allow you to take time off unpaid... its really quite good ... only catch is.. u can take 6 months off, with the guarantee of doing the same job as before, but anything longer than 6 months means you arent guaranteed the job you left, meaning you could get anything?! which considering im a qualified electrician and mechanical engineer with a Foundation degree wouldnt be the end of the world lol.
im going travelling this summer for 5 weeks to peru, im gunna go america next year for 2 months.... i was gunna buy a focus RS but ive decided that can wait til im 23 lol... insurance would be cheaper too. lol
I am in the same predicament. I have only come to one conclusion: you only live once! Go for it. Let me know what you decide...
Haha thanks so much for all your replies they have gave me butterflies reading them. Unfortunately a sabbatical would not be an option as I work for a small firm and all employees are quite depended on. Working abroad appeals to me although I know very little on the subject. As far as I can pick up work in America is a no go without a green card, japan similar and most the work for brits in asia is volunteer work or teaching English. Although I don’t believe there is anything stopping me from working in the EU. I am still mulling it over constantly and will let you all know what I decide.
just a little suggestion.... how about looking for a job in aus, see them all the time in the paper looking for technicians of some sort... might be worth a look...

You are exactly same boat with me few months ago so I had posted same question and get feedbacks as above, just go for it. I am 24 years old male, am set my mind quit my current job and off to working holiday on this coming July.
As many people say, you only live once, you will regret when you are old enough. The more mature you are, the more commitments you have. I always think about this and decide go now is the most suitable time for me.
About what you are going to work as once you back from travelling, I am always concern about this question also. I can say that where there’s a will there’s a way. Since you have 5 years working experience so get a job that are related to your previous job scope shouldn’t be a problem.
