I am travelling to Canada in mid June, starting in Toronto, on a WHM visa and I'm wondering are there many out there doing the same? Or have done it in the past. I don't see a lot of threads for Canada compared to other parts of the world. A lot of people seem to be going there to work, but how is it for backpacking?
Canada is an expensive country for traveling. I traveled across all ten provinces in three months, staying in hostels and camping, buying food from local supermarkets, and mostly taking the Greyhound bus. It was still the most expensive trip I ever took. If I were to do it over again, I would probably give this company a try: http://www.moosenetwork.com/. And "No"--this is not an endorsement for said company. Canada is B-I-G country. Public transportation is not as extensive and frequent as Europe and Asia. Travelers might find it a bit challenging to get to various tour places without a rental car or joining a tour bus.
If you do decide to see Canada on your own without joining a tour company, then invest in a HI Hostel membership and a 15-day Greyhound bus pass. The 15-day pass will allow you to hop-on/hop-off the bus in various cities within this time frame. (*Buy the HI Hostel membership card first, because it will give you a 15-20% discount off of the Greyhound bus pass.) To see Quebec and the eastern provinces, buy the Orleans Express (Quebec) bus pass. Orleans Express also offers a hop-on/hop-off bus pass. Greyhound has limited stops in Quebec.

Saw your another post you're coming to Toronto on WHM visa. I'm doing the same too. Backpacking seems really not popular here in Canada, but travel still on our way! I'm looking into some bus/train trip, let's chat if you're interested!

It's sometimes difficult for new travellers - especially ones from the UK and Europe - to get their head around the sheer size of North America in general and Canada in particular.
Canada is over 40 times larger than the UK with barely more than half the population. The vast majority of the people and the vast majority of where you'll travel in Canada is contained along a fairly narrow strip of geography stretching almost 6,000 kilometres along the southern border with the US.
Those distances + the small population + the weather+ the geography add up to a travel infrastructure that is very expensive to build and maintain compared to most countries.
Have fun, but don't expect an inexpensive holiday compared to many other places in the world.
