Probably something that has been answered before but i was wondering, how much funds-wise do you need to pass entry into Australia as a backpacker? Basically the situation is, I have a working visa and plan on working, I'm taking funds with me (although it is just less than a grand £) and i also have family who i will be visiting at some point and can help me out.
1000 pounds will let you get by a while, but the question really depends on what kind of a spender you are. I met a few backpackers from the UK that blew through that amount in under a week... It's about 200-250 AUD per week for a bed in a shared room (check out the graph on the right of the page for averages throughout the year in shared/private rooms), and you would probably definitely want to add about the same for food/drinks/misc. That means that it would last roughly 3 weeks, not taking into account much travelling. If you find a job soon enough, this shouldn't be a problem, but it'll definitely put some pressure on you to job hunt right off the bat.
The formal requirement of the WHV is to have AUD $5000 in available funds, or about ~£3200. No one actually checks that, so you'll be able to enter Australia just fine. But yeah, as Sam sketches, the money won't last you much more than three weeks, so you'll need to be looking for work straight away, and be lucky. I see in your profile that you're a bartender; that should help you quite a bit, as bartending is a frequent and quite in-demand position for backpackers. Get an RSA (Responsible Serving of Alcohol) certificate as soon as you're there (for the state in which you intend to work) and cross your fingers. And if you can, try to save up as much more as you can still. Almost everyone really ends up needing that AUD $5000, or returns home much sooner than they'd like.

I was just wondering Sander, you say "formal requirement" and that nobody checks it, so do they ask you this upon entry at the airport? I'm guessing if they do i just say yes i do have it, and they'll let me in without a fuss? My biggest nightmare would be to go all that way then not be let in!
It's formal, in that it's one of the eligibility requirements for the WHV. See for example . It's been a long time since I got my own WHV, and things have changed, but I'm assuming that during the visa application process they ask you to confirm that you meet all eligibility requirements / have sufficient funds. If you confirmed that, but don't, you'd have gotten the visa under false pretenses or somesuch.
However, despite the "You may be asked to provide evidence." phrasing on that page, no one who has ever reported about it here on travellerspoint has ever been asked to do such when entering Australia, nor at any other point during the process. They don't ask you anything about this subject at the airport; just say "welcome to Australia, enjoy your stay here"

Reading this is a relief- I was worried about the money and them checking upon entry too...same situation as OP, though I'll be entering with close to $2000, but planning on working and immediately staying with my boyfriend, so I won't need to support myself too much with that money. Thank God they don't actually verify, haha.
