Phoenix - Grand Canyon - Santa Fe

Next summer, my family and I are thinking of flying into Phoenix, driving to Sedona, then on to the Grand Canyon, then driving from there to Santa Fe and flying home from there. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to stay, amount of time to spend in each spot, or changes we should consider making to our itinerary.

I like to spend just the one day in Sedona, two to three days at the Grand Canyon, and two days in Santa Fe.

However, it is easily possible to spend more time in these places (like a week at the Grand Canyon), or at places nearby--the reason my time at these places is limited is because I usually spend time also at Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell (near Page, Arizona), at Monument Valley, at the north rim of the Grand Canyon (as well as the south rim), in Zion, at Mesa Verde, at Moab, Utah--and even taking the steam train from Durango, Colorado up to Silverton. How long you spend is a matter of personal choice.

As far as where to say, that also depends on preferences. Sedona has 5 star high class resorts with golf and spas, but it is also possible to camp nearby and just drive over. Also, there are cheaper hotels in Flagstaff and Williams nearby if you want a hotel, but don't want to spend the extra money. Same for many of the other resort areas. Also, in some cases there are great hotels right at the location (like in Monument Valley, but very cheap hotels just 20 miles down the road).

I do suggest booking your choices early, though. These areas get extremely packed (especially during the summer)---and (for example) places at the north rim of the Grand Canyon book up even a year in advance. Also, keep your gas tank filled. It is more than 100 miles between gas stations in many of these areas--and you don't want to have to walk through the desert in 100 degree plus weather.
