First Time Traveller

Hey Guys
I'm a first time traveler, looking to get away ASAP
Probaby have to wait until the new year now though, is anyone one else planning to go away at that time?
A question for expereince travellers, how would you recommend i go about things?
Should i book through a tour company or just go solo, i think probably be better to go through someone
Could you please recommend to me what is the best way to go
Many Thanks in advance
Morgan

I am planning a trip to SEA starting in January 2012. I plan to take a course in Phuket which ends jan 27 then hit up a full moon party feb 8 and travel north from there. I would like to visit the rest of thailand, burma, laos, vietnam and finish my trip in the philipines. I traveled through australia for a few weeks and cought the travel bug. I am 25 years old and am traveling solo as well. I was nervous at first in OZ but it was the best thing i eve did and would love to get back there. But I gues one thing at a time so for now it is SEA, something new which I have heard nothing but good things about. Does anybody with SEA experience have any suggestions? I figure a genreal idea is good and the just wing it when i get there. I would love to meet up with people like myself who are traveling solo and up for an adventure! My only dilema is when do i book my flight home to new york from the philipines?! is one month enough?

Morgan, no one can give you pertinent advice when you give no clue as to your location, likes/dislikes, budget, etc.

One thing to consider though... there are very competent tour groups out there for nervous travellers but there are also LOADS of easy destinations (Thailand, etc.) for first time travellers that offer a completely foreign experience - but with great infrastructure for foreign backpackers. With some research and a good guidebook travelling solo is not difficult.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

You learn and grow by researching, planning and traveling on your own - it's not all that hard. All you need is a passport, maybe a visa (depending on the destination), tickets and a little money.

When you use a tour to do all this, it's not the same experience, and you probably won't enjoy the trip as much (or remember quite as much).

I think the best way to go is to keep the whole process simple, and to start out by taking a short, inexpensive trip first. Once you get the hang of it, you'll wonder why on earth you thought the process so worrisome.

These days, the whole process can be done on your own since we have this wonderful thing called the internet. Even the smallest, cheapest hostel or hotel will probably have a website, and 100% of the airlines and larger hotels certainly do. Most airports have a site, and I arrange visas online as well.

If you're a native English speaker, you have a great advantage - English is now the #1 international language, and you will find that this eases your travels considerably. Buy a guidebook as long as it's been published recently, but take that info with a grain of salt, and do additional research about a destination.
