Hello! I'm leaving for my RTW trip this coming January and it will take me through every continent except Antarctica. I plan on taking a smartphone with me on the trip and am looking for expertise or advice on the subject.
Essentially you'll need a tri or quad band phone, unlocked. Then buy local sim cards as you travel or go for a global one if you want to have one number the whole trip.
Personally I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a phone better than the iPhone. With all the apps available, and free messages to everyone else with an iPhone (regardless of country!!) it's basically way ahead of its competition.

As much as I despise Apple and the way they do things, I may have to consider the phone just for the trip and then get rid of it when I get back to the states. Any idea how many bands an iPhone has? Any possible recommendations outside of the iPhone? Thanks again man.
No need to despise them... once you've used it you'll see how many light-years ahead they are One thing about Apple phones is that they actually manage to hold their value. I sold my 3GS a few months ago and got nearly the same as I paid for it. I doubt any other phones come even close to that.
I'm pretty sure it's at least a tri-band, but it might be a quad-band as well. Realistically though, you need to list the countries you are going to, then check each of their bands as you might not even need a quad-band.
