I'd probably pick Hong Kong - I've never been there, but have known many others who have, and there is no doubt that this is one of the world's most interesting cities - the quality of the Cantonese food alone is worth a visit (certainly not cheap, but cheaper than W. Europe).
Have you considered elsewhere? One of my favorite places is Hanoi - just as cheap as Bangkok, and a fascinating destination because the center of town is compact enough to walk everywhere. Hanoi is very safe and very friendly - I've been there 4 times, and will soon return.
I would have to agree with Daawgon. If you are only choosing from Hong Kong, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur I would go for Hong Kong. It is a mind blowing place and the food it out of this World.
I have also been to Hanoi and if it was between Hanoi and Hong Kong, I would go for Hanoi every time. I could easily spend 2 - 3 weeks there as it is amazing, I’ve only been once but I am planning a return trip with my wife in a year or 2.
Whatever you decide, Australia is awesome and you will love it. Where are you planning on going when you are there?

I've been to all three of them places and I tend to agree with the other two - Hong Kong!
It's one of the more interesting cities to visit - you have Hong Kong Island with the famous peak - take the tram to the top just before it gets dark and see the city in day and night, there is Happy Valley racecourse if you want a flutter on some horses, the giant floating restaurant at Aberdeen and various markets and temples to visit. There is also an authentic traditional Junk boat that you can take a tour of the harbour on - well recommended. For nightlife and restaurants try Lang Kwai Fong where you can find loads of bars.
On the Kowloon side you have Tsim Tsa Tsui and the avenue of stars - a great place to watch the Symphony of lights show that is put on everynight. Also the long Nathan road which runs north from Tsim Tsa Tsui up to the bustling Mongkok.
Also you must go and catch a ferry to visit Lantau island where there is a giant buddha at the top of some steps - There's also the Tai O small fishing village on the island which is worth a visit.
I spent a week in Hong Kong and totally enjoyed it - you won't get bored! But like any big city it's not gonna be very cheap accomodation wise. But there are places - a short google of "hostel mongkok" may be useful for you

I'd say Hong Kong aswell over Kuala Lumpur but haven't been to Singapore but from what I've heard is very expensive. We spent 5 fantasic day in HK before heading to the UK.
We did all the touristy things and definitly jump on a bus and explore the islands.
We stayed in ChungKing Mansions which is where all the cheap hostels are. I found it a bit intimidating at first! It's basically a place where everybody and anybody is in HK if you're not Chinese, so alot of different nationalities. I'd say it was mostly dominated with Indian/Africans that permanently live there but we had a great time and very well located in the city. Some nice Indian restos there too but you have a wide choice and you may get handed a flyer or 2!!

I would also say Hong Kong as it is probably more different than KL or Singapore. I have been to all three 2 or 3 times......Singapore and Hong Kong in the last 2 years.
Singapore is really nice to visit these days with Marina Bay Sands for viewing the city, the Bum Boats down the river, Raffles etc.You can walk a lot of the city.
Hong Kong has plenty to keep you busy too. Have a look at -snip-to see which appeals.You can get a good idea of the attractions and activities in both Hong Kong and Singapore.
If you can spend 3 days that will give you time to see a lot, but another day or two in either would be nice, especially Hong Kong.

I will prefer Singapore. It is the most enjoyable country of Asia. Sentosa, East Coast Park, Underwater World, Night Safari etc are some of the attractions of Singapore. If you have three options for holidays then i will strongly recommend to choose Singapore.
Hong Kong, I've been to HK, 8 times... I love it. But that is because I hail from 3rd world Asia. If I was from London or Sydney, would I love it as much? Yes, if I have money to get drunk in that bar street in the HK island. Accomodations can be expensive for the 3rd word travellers, but you can get 100 HK dollars per night at the ChungKing Mansions, which I would think is cheap, unless you plan to stay for a month.
Hong Kong has this cosmopolitan vibe.... Shanghai and Shenzhen have the skycrapers and all, but it doesn't have the ambiance of Hong Kong.
But if I were you, I'll go to Singapore and take the bus to KL. Hong Kong is cliche, but so is Bangkok, well atleast Bangkok is cheaper.
Hanoi is the capital of a developing, totally not on the same league with Hong Kong, KL and Singapore. But it can be just expensive. I have been to Vietnam three times and I eat at KFC almost everyday. Because the noodle shops were built for Western travellers. It's expensive, unless you earn in dollars and is on a short vacation.

I know the difference of Hong Kong : before 1997 and after 1997.
any guys if you love the current Hong Kong , you would leave your home country and stay Hong kong for the rest of your life had your first visit made in Hong Kong in 1980's - 1990's . The ambience was so so so great. more British here and no signs of mainland chinese tourists here. the streets were cleaner, quieter and more civialized.
I NEVER SEEN ANY CHINESE SPIT OR NAILS CLIPPING IN PUBLIC , BUT NOW ON YOUTUBE YOU COULD RETRIEVE THE CLIPPING , SOME MAINLAND TOURISTS POO IN THE MIDDLE OF OCEAN CENTER, TSIM SHA TSUI; OTHERS PEE IN THE METRO (mtr)...

I have lived and the travelled in China for more than 3 years, and this whole spitting fascination or aversion, I can I only this in less than ten occassions... China is a population of billions, so if 1% of the population spits everywhere, you do the Math, what is 1% of 1 billion.
People noticed the negative, when they came in search of the exotic, the disturbing, the disgusting and the stuff that make good blog entry for bored relatives and friends with jobs back home.
"No signs of mainland Chinese tourist here." I'm sure you have a point, but this statement kills it.
In China I have seen Chinese spitting and lots of British men swimming naked in rivers in broad daylight and yes they are not drunk.
