I'm soon to jet off to s.e Asia and I was told by my doctor that I can't take doxycycline if I want to drink... I've googled it and it's a mixed response. What are your experiences with both together??
You are really, really on the wrong forum to be asking this kind of question.
Cheers,
Terry
Is there any reason not to just listen to your doctor?
In general I'd always be careful mixing meds and alcohol, but especially so if the doc says so. If you absolutely have to take doxycycline, then skip the booze. Otherwise, skip the meds while you are in SE Asia?
This isn't the wrong site to ask this question due to the fact this is a anti- malaria drug which is used by travellers. When I done some research people say it is advised for doctors to tell you that you can't. What I want to no is members first hand experience's of using this anti-malaria drug whilst consuming alcohol and if they have suffered side affects.
I wouldn't recommend it, I once went a few days doing that and puked up blood..... quick answer!
"... This isn't the wrong site to ask this question..."
That is incorrect.
This site is NOT populated with medical professionals with a long history of peer reviewed posts so you know you're receiving a legitimate second opinion.
Cheers,
Terry
I took doxy all the way through asia and also partyed a lot and suffered no ill effects personally.
I don't use doxy in Bangkok or Pattaya. If you plan on staying in Bangkok in some of the previously flooded areas there may be more mosquitoes this year - so consider that! In Bangkok I usually choose a hotel in the Sukhumvit area not far from the Skytrain route.
When I have used doxy in Thailand I always take it with food. My prescription containers always say
"Take With Food!"
I pack some food in and then the pill and some more food on top of it. Like during breakfast or dinner. If you plan on living on booze only and also using doxy remember to eat when you take the capsule. I guess in that case malaria is a bigger scare than cirrhosis of the liver!

....I am by no means a doctor but alcohol will probably limit the effectiveness of Doxy....I drank a fair amount of alcohol whilst taking Doxy and had no side effects what so ever! (apart from hangover!!) Took Doxy in the morning with breakfast.
I also took Doxy whilst travelling in Asia and was fine with alcohol (well, nothing stood out for me as being out of the ordinary).
One thing I would advise, take it in the morning, after breakfast. It's not advisable to take before bed (lying down) as it's pretty strong and can burn a hole in your oesaphagus (sp?) if not digested properly.
