Hi all
I found a few that may be of interest to you - I realise that there are many different areas to Accountancy but I hope you can find something on there and enjoy Australia!
I used Metier recruitment and got a job within a week, Robert Walters were also good.
How much are you looking to spend a week accommodation wise? For my last couple of months in Oz I actually moved into Ashfield Manor, which is a really nice clean and cosy B&B/guesthouse in Ashfield. That cost me $250 a week including breakfast, all bills, tea and coffee, room servicing, etc, etc.
The market here seems to be very slow and so i am still looking for a job and starting to panic about that
When I was looking for a webdevelopment job a couple of years ago, I experienced the same. I started looking in mid October, and didn't find anything throughout November and December (worked cleaning rooms in the hostel I was staying at to stretch the money). Then in the first week of January I got five job offers. Apparently the entire professional world in Australia is always ramping down on the way to Christmas, and then taking off like crazy once it's the new year.
Obviously I don't know if this is what's happening here (nor if you'd be as lucky as I was in the new year), but I consider it likely. If you have the money, I'd recommend taking a break from job searching for now and just going to see something of the country. Then come back in the last week of December and start applying again.
Sydney is a notoriously difficult place to find decent (and affordable) accomodation. I've heard stories of waiting lists as long as your arm to see flea-ridden 1-bed hell-holes miles from the CBD.
Having said that there are some great places available, but unfortunately it may take a little time. My other half's cousin found a great apartment in Mosman but it took him several months of searching first.
Thanks all
It's great to hear its not just me!! Visiting more apartments tonight so hopefully get sorted on that part soon!! Some of them have been just awful and insane prices!!
Met another recruitment agent today - said all week she has met Irish accountants looking for work but hopefully I'll be lucky and get placed soon! Once I get place to live sorted I can try get work anywhere - like pub, shop etc! Just to have some money coming in while I continue the search!!
Keep trying I guess!!! Lol
Thanks again everyone for your advice
I feel like Im the official and sole sponsor for this website, but as I've said before, go and check out whats available in Sydney. You will not only find a place to stay and food, in exchange for a few hours work, but often local people will know someone who knows someone who is looking to hire. Like they say it's not what you know, but who you know. You may even find someone that has a nice room that will rent it to you rather than you doing the 4 hours work. At worst it will stop your immediate drain on funds while you regroup. Good luck.
