Registering my car

Hi all, stuck in a rut here over car rego. i came to perth on a working holiday visa and living in perth, i bought a car off a fella here that he drove over from QLD and has qld plates and rego. but the rego is expiring tomorrow at midnight. he gave me WA transfer of ownership forms which i sent in to WA dept of transport but they sent them back saying i had to do it thru qld. this fella has left oz and i can't get intouch with him now so am wondering if theres any ways about getting around registerin the car before it expires? i rang qld dept of trans but they wouldn't let me register it cos its not in my name. such a pile of hassle. didn't want to go thru the whole thing of changing plates and getting it inspected cos il prolly use it to travel around oz in anyway. if anyone has any tips or way i could get round this asap id really appreciate it

It would seem to me that you need to get in contact with the seller, and have them complete the correct transfer papers. It's probably going to be very difficult getting the vehicle registered as once the rego expires, it was last registered by someone else.

It's possible that you might have lost your money, but perhaps someone else who knows better will come along.

I agree, you won't be able to renew the QLD registration on this car unless the owner (the person whose name it is registered in) completes the QLD transfer of ownership details.

In NSW a cars registration can be renewed up to 3 months after it has expired, you shouldn't drive it during this 3 month period as it is unregistered. The same may apply to QLD registration, if it does this might give you some time to get things sorted.

You are really heading down a rocky road here. If your vehicle is now un registered, its also now un insured. If you hit someone, you are fully liable for all damages.

Like i said when you first asked about buying this car, buying out of state is a big hassle. Even more so now you've found out this guy duped you by giving you the wrong transfer of registration form.

When you buy a vehicle it must be re registered in your name within 14 days. Sounds like he has not sent in his transfer of registration to QLD, which puts you in a tricky position. To register it in QLD you'd need not only his signature on the transfer of registration form, but you'd need a current safety sticker from QLD. Neither of those you can do. So, and I don't even know if this can be done without something else from the seller, you need to re register the vehicle in WA. You have no other choice. Call them and find out what you need to do.

In the US we have an abandoned vehicle form. Basically this guy has abandoned the vehicle. Then you'd fill in the form to claim ownership of it. You might not need to do this since he has signed a WA transfer of registration, but you need to talk to WA to try to figure it out.

Ok I just checked the WA driver and vehicles services website,(something I told you to do before you bought it and clearly you didn't! insert waging finger smiley)

You can get the vehicle registered in WA by filling out the ‘Transfer of Vehicle Ownership by Statutory Declaration’. form. It takes 21 days for them to verify the detail and they don't actually say this is for an out of state registration, but I assume it would be the same. This seems to be similar to the form I mentioned in the US of an abandoned vehicle form.
