South America budget

I am going away by myself for the first time next year.

What's your travel style? Are you sleeping in dorms, cooking your own food and riding chicken buses... or do you want a private room/bath, eat in restaurants and take the occasional taxi? Are you party hardy 24/7 or spend your days wandering around sightseeing and in the evenings reading a book in a quiet cafe?

Lastly, which guide book(s) are you using?

Cheers,
Terry

I'm at the very early stages of my travel planning. Haven't got any books but do have a vague idea of countries I would like to visit. Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina - its quite important for me that I pick up as much Spanish as possible. In terms of travelling style, I'll sleep in cheap hostels/couch surfing and cook for myself but I do want to party.

The "Gringo Trail" in all those countries (and for that matter, all through Central/South America) is very well defined. In most places there's an extensive backpacker infrastructure (hostels, buses, etc.) that makes it quite easy for a first time traveller.

Your first step is to buy a few of the many excellent guide books available like Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Bradt, Footprint, etc. so you can start your research, as well as the many, many travel forums like this one, Lonely Planet, etc.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry
