SEA Transportation Budget

Where's my gurus?

Someone wrote in the TP blog a month or two ago..."when planning to travel, double your money and reduce your packed clothes by half." Since I've never been where you are going that's the best I can do. Enjoy your trip.

Uhhh... yea. This is my 3rd trip to Asia, 8 times to Europe, I've traveled to Australia and S. Pacific, and central America. But thanks i guess.

Who's going to do all that math? Suggest you take rhislop's advice

Where's my gurus?

I will be in Vietnam & Thailand thi summer studying abroad. So a lot of my transportation is included with the price I have to pay. The last 2 weeks I will be on my own. I am trying to budget my transportation fees... getting from A to B, a tuk-tuk here, a taxi there, back to the airport.
What I would like to know is, how much should I expect to pay to get from:

From Bangkok to Krabi (overnight) then from, I guess, the bus station to the hostel ...
My guess: 1000-1500B

Overnight bus from Southern Bus Station:
"Depends on number of seats:
a/c 250 THB, up to 650 THB VIP, 20-30 THB songthaew to Krabi town."

From Krabi to Phi Phi and back (with taxi to the pier)...
My guess: 500-600B each way, 20B entry fee for Phi Phi, 100B taxi

"Ferry is 400 THB, walk or 40 THB long-tail boat to GH."

From Krabi to Surat Thani by bus then the overnight boat to Ko Phangan ...
My guess: less than 1000B

"Bus is 140 THB to Surat Thani, overnight ferry to Koh Phangan 400 THB."

From Ko Phangan back to Bangkok, taxi to hostel ...
My guess: 600-800B ish?

"Some private companies will combine boat-bus for around 800 THB."

From Bangkok to Siem Reap (whole boarder crossing, w/ electronic visa) ...My guess: 600B ... (also, is this as scary and scammy as I've read?)

"Read up on the DO NOT use the KSR travel shops. Do it on your own, about $30-50. Depends on if you use the bus or train, bus or share taxi from Poipet to SR."

From Siem Reap to Phnom Penh ...
My guess: $35-60 US .. (I'd rather go by boat < comments welcome on this too)

"Take the bus; $5-10, depends on the company. Boat is $35 and a rip-off."

From Phnom Penh to HCM City ...
My guess: I read around $10-15US

"Many companies run buses: PP-HCMC. Figure $10. Buy your VN visa while in PP."

From HCM to Airport ...
My guess: $10US
I am budgeting about $200US right now for all of this .. let me know if I am close or way off. Thanks

Most GHs have signs for airport, $4/person. I paid 100,000 VND ($6) from Ton San Nhat to Pham Ngu Lao: Use Vinasun or Mai Linh taxi if you book yourself. Hope this helps, Mike

One would think that you would have learned by now then, that prices fluctuate drastically in SEA especially where transport is concerned. So rhislop's advice is as accurate as about any that you will get.

In August i went by bus from Bangkok to siem Reap it was 500 baht then about 1100 baht for a visa at boarder apparently cheaper if you have a photo with you! (Not scary at all, but make sure you change your money to American and not riel!) and from siem riap to Phnom penh by bus was only 18 american dollars and i took ferry/overnight train from koh phangan to bangkok and it was 1350 baht..
