Advice!!

Hi everyone, have been in oz for 3 weeks and not very happy in my job.Working with horses at the mo and finding the people a bit unfriendly even though i've been trying to make conversation!!Its making me really homesick but I really dont want to give in so quickly. In Melbourne at the mo but would not mind moving as would love to see a bit of the real australia.Does anyone have any advice on backpacker jobs, where to do them or where is good to go to experience a bit of the real oz.Really need some advice asap!!Thanks, Karen.

Hi Karen,
Sorry to hear your not getting on so well. I hope by the time you get this things will have picked up for you. I have not travelled yet but am heading to Oz nxt yr. I am also a horse lover. I saw your post and my heart went out to you. Maybe try heading out to a few of your locals and meeting more people. Are you staying in the place you work..if so maybe try staying in a local hostel for a nite or 2..those places are supposed to be gr8 for meeting people..head up mate...its only normal to feel home sick d first few weeks and people like dat wud not make it any easier.xx

Hey Karen,

I could imagine it's very isolated place that you are working in so I suppose it's something you can't help too much so don't worry! I went Australia a while ago, spent 4/5 months there and found people to be insanely cool and chilled out! From personal experience and extensive backpacking in countries all over the world, I have always found bars the best place to meet people, although in the case with Oz it was different. Most of the friends I made were in hostels and even to this day, 2 years later, I'm still good friends with these people. Deffo stay at a hostel, it's much easier to make friends and socialise. Also, whenever I felt a bit sad or homesick I'd listen to my best-friend....Ipod! It really cheers you up when you're hankering for home and can really turn your mood around, play some of your fave bands and I'm sure you'll pick up again. Hope you feel better and taker our advice!

Jobs - I found Perth quite a good place to get a job, plus they pay really well as it's the most expensive plave in Oz...I'd recommend waitressing work as it's good pay and generally you get treated really well (Manager used to give us free bottles of wine!) You can do fruit-picking in Adelaide although there's not much to do there despite decent places to go culturally!

Places - Perth was my favourite place, Sydney was great too. Weren't a big fan of Melbourne though. :s

P.S. - I've written a book based on being a backpacking novice called 'The Renegade Backpacker', check it out as it goes through the motions of what you're going through...a bit of solace in your day.

Go check out Its like a Woofers program but it includes more general people that just want to offer a place to stay and dinner, for travelers in exchange for 3 or 4 hours work. What I like about it is its a great way to get to know real locals in their family environment. You get to get out of the backpacker circle and really experience a country. Often these people can offer you full time work too.

Hey Kaz,

As you are out there, then you might as well try and make the most of it. If nobody or nothing is making you stay in Melbourne don't be afraid to move on. I am sure if you did the Kiwi Experience or caught the Greyhound around you would meet people without any problems. As previously mentioned hostels are a great place to meet people too.

I got a job in Sydney very easily and it was well paid. If you need a list of decent recruitment agents there I can send you details.

I liked Perth too, the Great Ocean Road was lovely and seeing the Whitsundays and Fraser Island is a must. I also thought Tasmania was beautiful.

Don't forget you are also a short hop from New Zealand, where I found the people to be really friendly.

Hope it all works out for you

Thanks for all the advice guys. Things are a little better now and I suppose its normal to get a bit home sick in the first couple of weeks. Thinking of heading to Perth after christmas,so hopefully things will work out.
Karen
