Getting a transfer flight to Melbourne might be a good idea, you'll be arriving in the Australian summer which is the wet season up north. Anywhere north of Brisbane is likely to be pretty humid and flooding is possible, this year it was pretty bad in Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns. If you start in Melbourne you might still catch the tail end of the wet season when you reach Brisbane, but it shouldn't be too bad.
