head for ko san road,theres loads along there all within your sort of budget and with your own private bathroom..i forget the name of the one i stayed in but i remember it being a big tall white building on the left as you walk along ko san road,there was a tattoo shop downstairs and it was about a 3rd of the way along along ko san..you cant go wrong,theres hundreds of hostels and hotles in that vacinity...
p.s..as soon as you arrive at the end of ko san and get out your taxi and head up ko san roas you'll probably get harassed quite abit by guy's trying to get you into certain hotels and hostels,many are scam's...just keep walking and check the hotels for yourself...if they do take you to a half decent hotel theres usually fee's placed on top of the going rate for them!!

Nappark .. done and done. cheap clean hostel. 2 block up from KSR and for their best option, a 6 bed dorm, you pay 550B. It's not ensuite, but it is perfectly cleaned.
Khao San Road is not the only place you can get a place to stay in your price range. For Thailand there are many small hotels and guest houses you can also stay at besides hostels. Once you leave Bangkok you won't find that many hostels anyway.
Here are two hostels that are not far from the Skytrain route. No Skytrain in the KSR area.

Suk 11 Hostel is well known. Many women stay there. Easy walk to Skytrain, restaurants, malls, travel agencies for tours and nightlife.
Rail service Bangkok:
If you arrive during the day or early evening you can even use the Rail Link and Skytrain to get to above places.
i stayed in a lovely hostel Lamphu House, just a couple of streets up from the Khao San Road. Absolutely sounds hostel, and very reasonable. I had a private room within your price range....but that was last year,
