which travel insurance did people go with for a 12month ticket, the best sounding iv found which includes some sports incl bungee jumps etc is STA's but its £325 per person which seems abit steep to me.

I've taken out STA's Blue Premer cover so it's cost me about £400 for 12 months. I did look at various different companies and policies, and I know there are definately cheaper ones. But most didn't include a lot of the adventure sports I want to do. E.g. skydiving is not included in the vast majority of policies, neither is stuff like zorbing. It's weird as I imagine they are very typical RTW activities (perhaps that's why some companies charge extra?!)
I figured if I wanted to add cover on for these type of things I'd end up paying more and the premiums would soon stack up.
I've heard good things about World Nomads insurance, and Insure & Go but again, not every sport is covered. They are worthj checking out though to compare costs.
I've opted to go for the most health cover I can get (there's usually some kind of Gold/Silver/Bronze type option) but I never know whether it's worth going for the highest - are we likely to need £10,000,000 worth of accident/health cover when we could get £5,000,000 worth??!!

I went with a company called holidaysafe.co.uk I got 18 months cover for just over £200, everything essential covered right down to mugging and hijack. Repatriation, hospital fees etc etc. The standard package included bungee jump, white water rafting, loads of extreme activities you'd expect to pay extra for. Not bad.
You can upgrade for an extra £30 or so to include skydiving and some even more extreme activities. I did this as I know I want to skydive and thought it was best to have cover for that! I went for the longstay insurance rather than backpacker as it covered you for more for less excess (£75)
I did search through a lot of companies to get this price as most are up on the £300+ mark. It might not suit everyone but it impressed me lol!

I have used ACE insurance for several long trips. The last one, 11 months through Africa in 2009, cost £136. I was really only interested in medical cover as I wasn't carrying any possessions particularly worth insuring nor was I expecting to take part in any "extreme" sports. However it was the cheapest I could find at the time so it might be worth checking out.
Obviously the price and the cover provided are just 2 aspects of a policy - the 3rd is how easy it is to make a claim on it. Fortunately for me, though not much use for the purposes of this thread, I had no need to make a claim.
thanks for all the replies STA was one of the better ones i found but 400 is weeelll over my budget. the best i could find was flexicover which covered alot of sports for around 250ish.
il definately have a look at holiday safe, sounds good. id like to do a skydive in oz as well so seems ideal.

sarah did u stay in one country for the travels? i was just wondering if a long stay type insurance would still cover you if your moving around different countries??
I've been trawling through policy wording documents for days trying to find the best policy! I think we are going to go with either Top Dog or Down Under Insurance as they seem to come out the best.
I've been looking at 12 months in Australia, but also been keen to have the sports and also a higher value on personal possessions. Down Under let you add on high value items for an extra premium which is great for us as we are taking two iphones and a laptop and the £150 most other insurance companies will pay up to just doesn't cut it!
I can send you my spreadsheet comparing them all, but it's mainly directed at Oz & NZ rather than RTW, and it's for a couple rather than individual traveller.

The longstay cover I took out covered me for worldwide except USA, Canada and the Caribbean. I'm going to be travelling SE Asia and Oz, NZ so that suits me. The policy didn't state that I'd have to be in one country for the duration. I think the backpacker one was just a more basic cover for gap year students, wheras longstay seemed to give you a more in depth cover.
I'm not taking a laptop and doubt I'll take my iPhone, the most valuable things I'll have will probably be my bank cards and passport so luckily don't need a higher premium for expensive items.
£250ish sounds good, thats about what I paid for loads of sports etc.
Some of the Oz and NZ backpacker insuarances I found were a really good price which is fine if you're just going there, but unfortunatley it seems to be a bit more for companies which include Asia etc.

ye thats what i seem to spend my time doing at the min, endless policy wordings! thanks for the post but im looking for more rtw than just oz, i think il only be there for 5months or so.
Sarah, with the longstay you are right it doesn't specify that you remain in one country and im not sure how old you are but the longstay is for 40-55 y/olds. just thought u might need to know? if u made a claim its an easy way they could get out of paying you.

The longstay I've taken out with that company is for 16-55 year olds. The longstay offers a greater age range compared to the backpacker insurance which only covers under 40's and seemed more suitable to students studying abroad etc.
I had a look but couldn't see one for 40-55 year olds (those 15 years seems an odd age range) I'm 24 so either or would have suited me but I preferred the policy of the longstay as higher sums were insured etc.
