Berlin October 2012 Help From People Who Have Been!?

Hi I'm headed to Berlin in october on my own I'm 18 and not very interested in museums ect, I prefer shopping and wacky or weird things.
Is their much to do in Berlin? Also is travelling around the city and surrounding areas easy if you don't speak German?

Hi there!

I have a couple thoughts for you...

- I was in Berlin about two years ago (I'm 25) and my favorite memory was this place called Dr. Pong. http://unlike.net/berlin/after-dark/dr-pong. It is essentially a bar where you play ping pong in a round-robin fashion until there is one winner. Then do it again. Extremely quirky, good crowd and good fun.

- In general I think most travelers will ask people for pictures no problem. In famous places there are lots of people taking pictures. Sometimes it works to offer to take their picture, then they can do it for you in return.

- If I recall, there are a pretty good amount of English speakers, especially likely at the hostel where you are staying.

Hope you have a great time!

There is a street art tour that starts at Alexanserplatz. It takes you all around the city looking at the different types of street art. One of the highlights of my visit there.

I am going to Berlin at the end of October for work and extending my stay on my own. I checked the Viator website for tours and they have a total darkness dinner thing I might do. You have four menus to choose from and then you eat with other people in total darkness. The waiters are visually impaired and there is entertainment like music, mystery story or comedy act. Sounds pretty wacky! I also plan to stay in a hostel called "The Circus" that is rated #1 on Trip Advisor and receives rave reviews. It's also not very expensive compared to other places in Berlin.

Hi,

I visited Berlin for the first time in April and absolutely loved it! You mention that you enjoy shopping, head to Ka'Da'We, it is a huge department store and has an amazing food hall, you can spend hours there!

Also, travelling around the city is very easy, and pretty cheap if you get a U-Bahn day ticket. Most Germans spoke English to me and my friends (even when I attempted to speak German to them!) so you won't have any problems there.

There is an amazing fondue restaurant that I really recommend as well called Feuer and Flamme. Although I travelled with two girlfriends, everyone there seemed very friendly and open to talk, so I'm sure you'll be fine, especially if you're staying in a hostel. Have fun!

I agree with Meghan: the KaDeWe food hall is absolutely fantastic!

There's loads to do in Berlin- I was there for 4 days and there's still plenty I haven't seen. Checkpoint Charlie is interesting and there is a good museum on site which documents escapes from East Berlin to the West. The Reichstag is interesting too; get there early to avoid the worst of the queues. Also worth seeing are the Brandenburg Gate, the Kaiser Wilhelm Church, East side gallery (a stretch of the Berlin Wall which has been maintained) Schloss Charlottenberg, the Jewish Memorial and the Berlin Dom. Alexanderplatz and Kreuzberg are cool streets/areas to wander around. Unter Den Linden is a famous boulevard in the Mitte district and is a nice walk with a number of interesting sites.
