What are the Common Scams to Avoid in Hanoi?

Make sure you always agree on a price with a cyclo driver before the journey. The one time we didn't, the driver and his friend became quite aggressive and tried to rip us off for a huge amount! Also beware of the drivers pretending they have mis-heard you, ie you say 13,000 dong and they claim you said 30,000.

I've stopped using the cyclos because I've been scammed so many times - only place where I was not scammed on a cyclo was in Hoi An Town.

Taxis are the real biggie in Vietnam - save your self the problems by only using Mai Linh Group cabs (make sure it's this exact spelling and not M. Linh or Mai L. or M.L.) They overcharge and often do not deliver you to the right destination (really bad out of Hanoi airport).

In Saigon people approach on the street and give you a sob story about a relative - never go with them anywhere. They're trying to get you to gamble, and naturally the game is fixed and you lose BIG TIME!

Use your God-given COMMON SENSE. When it doesn't feel right, just walk on and continue down the street.

NEVER never never go to the Hanoi Night Market with any kind of bag or purse - it will be slit open and you have lost the contents (cash/camera/etc.)

Hi guide,

I let you know some thing will help you have good trip during you holiday in Vietnam.

1. Taxi: Do bargain 50% off. and confirm exactly how much to pay before get on car. Get receipt after finish to avoid you miss something in car to know the way to contact with driver. Even good taxi such as MaiLinh (green color), Hanoi Taxi.....
2. Motorbike: do the same with taxi.
3. Buy anything outside supermarket. Do the same with taxi (No recommend)
4. Do not take a lot of money, passport to going out. Just take hotel card to contact in care need their help. Everything important should take by yourself, keep in font of you.

Let me know your any worry!
Take care
