Work in Thailand

Hello happy forumers...

Matt,
Here are a few websites worth your time. has been living and teaching in BKK for many years. I would join and then ask your questions. Many posters live & work in Tland. They may have some valuable info for you. Good luck.

Don't count yourself out of the bar promo work. I saw plenty of guys doing it on the islands. If you are outward going you should be able to convince a bar owner that you can do it. I also met a Scottish guy that had lived for years in the Andaman islands as a DJ. So don't count that out either. Remember you don't need much money to live on in Asia! And yes there are schools that are willing to hire non TELF English teachers. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. Your biggest problem is going to the be the visa runs to renew your tourist visa. I'm not sure how people get around that these days.

You cannot legally work in Thailand without a work permit and they are hard to get!

You get caught working with a tourist visa you will get in trouble with Thai authorities.

Staying 6 months is posible with a tourist visa you get for 60 days and extend for 30 days. Leave Thailand, get another tourist visa and pay for extension again.

If you have a definite flight home a round trip ticket to and from Bangkok might be cheaper than 2 one way flights. You should be able to save a hundred pounds or more.

Thai Visa forum has info on visas and work permits.

The same could be said of Mexicans working in the US, but there is still 11 million of them giving it a go!

"The same could be said of Mexicans working in the US, but there is still 11 million of them giving it a go!"

You are right! In the US illegal aliens are considered heroes by liberal politicians! They go out of their way to give them free EBT cards, put them in public housing ahead of US citizens - even some of these same politicians want to give them free tuition for college! Often illegals have cars without insurance, no inspection stickers and they have no drivers licenses. But some states want to even give them free licenses - doesn't matter if they know how to drive properly! (With a free license they can sneak in to vote and vote for the guy who gives them more free stuff!)

Catch and release - just like fishing!

What a life! In my next life just treat me like an illegal alien in the US and I will be happy!

But in Thailand you will be deported and your embassy will pay the freight and give you the the bill later.

Well in thailand when people say you will be in trouble with the authorities im more concerned about ending up in thai prison than getting deported so i think that is worth the risk i guess...i dunno...i guess im gonna have to read up on it a lot more...

another thing...with the 6 month visa that you can get...is it possible to get this more than once? so for example I have the 6 month visa then leave thailand for like 6 months or more (maybe to come back to england to save more money) and then go back and do another 6 month visa?

Matt,
You really do need to think over the consequences of being caught working w/o a work permit or overstaying your visa. Here is that address what happens to you if caught. Good luck.

Yes, you can go back home and save up money for 6 months and return to Thailand. (Unless you were blacklisted!)

I don't know about "six months visas" but I know you can get a 60 day tourist visa, then extend it. Before your time runs you visit another country and buy another 60 day tourist visa and extend again.

Working only 6 months in your own country means you will be quitting a job just after you figure how to do it right. Then returning to UK and starting a new job again - not much work security in that type of employment. Don't you have companies in the Uk where you work a long time and you have various benefits when you retire - like a pension? No pension for screwing around in Thailand for 6 months a year!!

Now if you are 50 years or older, and have a verifiable income (like a pension or money in the bank) you can stay in Thailand on a retirement visa. A lot of the old farts you see in Thailand are retired with pensions! That's how they can sit around doing nothing day after day!

Why not do something even better. Get a job with a UK company doing business in Thailand! This way you get European wages while working in a cheap country like Thailand. But finding these legal jobs is not easy. You may have to get some special training or schooling. You would have to do a lot of research first but most of all be really lucky! Companies with ties overseas want someone with a good work history, good education and particular skills. Good salary though and a legitimate company does the paperwork for the work visa too!

There are plenty of careers that enable people to walk into a job and 6 months later walk out and then do it again 6 months after that, graphic design comes to mind as one. A lot of those people are on contracts anyway. Worrying about a job with a pension is ridiculous. These people are young and want to experience the world now. You are so totally out of touch, I'm not sure why you are on a backpackers forum.

Seriously, given the choice, would you go experience the world now while you are young and able to enjoy it, then worry about a career, with the benefit of having been exposed to a world experiences. Or would you, and this sounds like the choice you made. Work your life away in some dull job, waiting your your retirement, hating everyday and then finally when the time comes that you can travel with your meager retirement fund, find you are too old, blind, and set in your dull ways, to see anything, climb anything, or even stand the slightest hardships that backpacking can bring?
