I think I'd probably pick the Gold Coast for xmas, but you may like somewhere busier.
As to New Year, Sydney is very expensive then as that is the place to be (I suppose you've seen the fireworks display on TV?). Book accommodation there ASAP as many rooms have gone already.
Yeah i have. I know im probably doing the cliche tourist thing but i have never done it before so why not. Im told Sydney is a pretty good place to be at x-mas too ??

I was on work assignment for 2 months at Sydney in December last year, and the place is really pleasant. I stayed near Darling Harbour at Fraser Suites Sydney's corporate apartments; needless to say the fireworks were spectacular. Other than that, it's really your typical big city festivities that you'd find! There are also lots of art galleries and quaint little shops you can find in Sydney so be sure to check that out too.
