I'm a 26 year old male from Canada and I am landing in BKK on the 21st as well. I was planning on going north and being in Chiang Mai for Loi Krathong on the 28th. Or I might go south to island for the full moon party on the 28th...not sure yet. I'm going alone as well because of the same reasons you are. We should totally meet up!

I'd definitely be interested in meeting up! I'm heading up North to Chiang Mai from Bangkok (will probably spend 3 nights or so in BKK and then get the sleeper train to Chiang Mai)
I'm so glad the trip is finally booked, I have a general idea of where I want to go and what I want to see, I just need to work on the timings a bit more and decide how long I want to spend in each place! How long are you going to be in SE Asia for?

I'm am scheduled to fly out of Bangkok on December 20th. I wish I could stay longer but I have to get back to work. I plan on spending the first 2-3 days in BKK as well than I'm not sure if I'm going to head north or south. I definitely want to try and spend a couple days learning to scuba dive in the southern islands. Are you planning on heading to Chiang Mai than into Laos? I will also send you a message with my email adress.

Just for your info, when in Vietnam, I suggest hooking up with one of the free student guide services - they're wonderful people that you would enjoy meeting. You should send them an email several weeks in advance - you can also search for their websites. This is all done for English practice - the key to success in Asia is learning English!

Well, there are a lot of people in the same circumstance with you. Traveling in Vietnam you should spend more time to discover this beautiful country because of traveling fee in Vietnam is not expensive.

Barry - we'll definitely keep you in the loop about plans! Closer to the time we can all arrange to meet up and have a few drinks - I'm thinking Khao San Road will be an ideal choice :-) Are you spending the whole 6-9 months in SE Asia?
