Good Ryokans in Kyoto!

Hi Everyone:
I wanted to find out any good suggestions for Ryokans in Kyoto, we will be here 4 nights (going here in mid November for a honeymoon, future hubby and I :D )

Hi Qokoon,

I stayed at when I last went three years ago. They have nice private room options but it's not overly traditional. It's in a central location (straight up from JR Kyoto station past Higashi Hongan-ji) and I managed to take in a lot of the main sites from there.

There aren't many traditional onsen (hot springs) in Kyoto city. You'll find only one ryokan with onsen in the city on this list: http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/index.htm. It is also indoor and same sex only, so maybe not what you're after.

As you will see on that list many onsen ryokan are located around Lake Biwa, though there are some as close as 20mins away by train that also offer private outdoor baths.

Have a great trip!

Howdy, QoKoon! GenkiLee, again.

Last month while day-tripping in Kyoto's gorgeous Arashiyama district, we passed by a lovely hot springs hotel and thought we might like to stay there, sometime.

Name: Arashiyama Onsen Arashiyama Benkei
Here's their English website: http://www.benkei.biz/~english/

They have experience with foreign guests, which is always a plus if you don't speak the language.

If you're not going to spend money on a JR Rail Pass, staying here costs about the same (starting rate: 29,000/person for a basic room, 2 meals included), but it looks like a beautiful splurge for two. Each room has at the very least a private toilet and some of them have private hot springs tubs! (The hot springs water is the real thing, by the way).

The dinner menu is seasonal "kaiseki," a luxury many Japanese locals have never tried in their lives. (A good kaiseki dinner starts around 10,000 yen/person).

Worth considering. It's your honeymoon, after all.

Cheers!

GenkiLee
