I've gone through Vietnam Immigration 4 times (I use the VOA visa system and usually enter through Hanoi) and no one ever asked to see onward tickets. Basically, it's a breeze.
The problem you will have in Hanoi are the taxis at the airport - if you take any old cab, your chances of getting scammed are excellent. The best way to go is to have your hotel meet your flight (they hold up a card with your name on it). If you arrive in daylight hours, you can save a few bucks by taking one of the 3 airport shuttles outside of the airport.
Need a really good hotel in Hanoi? The 3* on Hang Dieu is next to perfect in my opinion - prices are moderate, and service is 5*. The Art will give you a free airport transfer with a 3 night booking. (I'll be there myself in Dec).
One word of warning about Vietnam - stay off of the roads as much as you can - Vietnamese drivers have no skill whatsoever, and follow no laws whatsoever (that I can see). Especially deadly are the long distance buses.

When I flew into Noi Bai, they check your visa of course, but do not ask for onward flight. They know most visitors will exit overland to a neighboring SEA country. Don't worry about that.
I would make use of the visa on arrival system set up for those flying into VN. Much better option than buying a VN visa in the UK IMO. Many companies to choose from. I used and will again. Or google: 'vietnam visa on arrival' and pick one.
Now getting into HAN. If you book a hotel in advance like one linked in above post, then problem solved. If that is too pricey, I would try to join another 2-3 other passengers heading into HAN and share a taxi. If that is not practical, there are share shuttle vans for $2-3. They leave when full. I just walked out of the airport and said I wanted the VN Airlines shuttle van. Never found it, but a lady with a clipboard took me to their van. Get everything clear before handing over any money. Mind your luggage. Be sure to have the name and confirmation of your hotel. They do try to steer you to a higher priced hotel. Be firm, this is part of the 'charm' of VN. Just about everyone will try to scam you while you travel around. The van touts will finally give up and drop you off at your booked hotel.
Now where to stay. Top of this page, 'accommodation' option. Find VN, pick HaNoi, plug in your dates. Highest rated hotel/GH listed first. I would pick several, read the reviews. I would book my first night. I doubt you want to arrive in HAN and then bump around trying to find a room in your price range.

Oh dear, havent we gone through this before. Your scare mongering about driving in Vietnam is only your opinion and yet you make out that to attempt to drive or be on the road means imminent death. Its completely untrue. Ive ridden motorcycles there and rode bicycles there, as have thousands of other travelers. Sure there is a danger, but thats the same in any country on a bike including America.
