VN is very safe from street crime. Theft is a problem as it is in most countries, but not violence.
I suggest you stay in the Old Quarter. That way you can walk to many sights and restaurants. Plenty of other visitors out there as well. I suggest you take a tour with Kids in HAN want to show you their city and practice their English. You get a free tour with local kids. Of course a donation would be accepted. A win, win IMO. This might be your fondest memory of your time in HaNoi. Give it a try!

Thank you mike. Yes I will be staying at the heart fo the Old Quarter. I will only be staying for 4 days and 2 days will be spent to roam around and the other 2 wil be spent at Ha Long.
I am supposed to be with a friend but her schedule was a mess. So I will be alone.
I still have to ask the hostel where I'd be staying if they have a safe for me to leave everything there.
