1 year in south America

I am going one year to South America to study Journalism! I need your help to decide where to go!

I can only comment on Buenos Aires but I loved it and thought it was a fantastic city. I'm sure there are plenty of social and political issues that you could report on from there.

right now I would head to Ecuador, and obvious choice regarding the Assange debacle. That is going to have a lot of development time over many months now. I think Ecuador would be a great country to visit too.

I think in any SA country you will find more than enough political/social issues to deal with.

Brazil has the upcoming World Cup and Olympics. How will they deal with those issues? Displacement of people and modernization in a developing economy??

You could base yourself in one major city and travel easily and cheaply around the continent.

So Chavas just got re-elected for 6 more years, Kristina K won't allow U.S. dollars into Argentina, and the Honduras President Manuel Zelaya is still hiding in Costa Rica because he was kicked out of office. You will not have a problem finding a story.

Also, You should check out southofhere.org. It was a university project about Patagonia. GO TO PATAGONIA! It's probably one of the coolest places on earth. I hiked around Torres del paine for 2 weeks and didn't spend to much money. It's unbelievable.

Hope this helps and you have the adventure of a lifetime.

Saludos

If i could pick anywhere in SA based on quality of life / scenery / people / plus political and sociological issues at its heart it would (for me) have to be Rio. As AndySN mentions, forthcoming World Cup Final, Olympics, one of the fastest growing economies in the world today but with huge unemployment and social inequality.

However, and i don't mean this to sound confrontational (i work in doco film-making myself - a form of journalism)... you're the one studying journalism. What is it you care about and why? What type of stories are you passionate to tell? Surely you should figure this out and base your location on that. No point in being in Patagonia if you're passionate about the effects of deforestation. A broad brush stroke to paint my argument with but hopefully you catch my drift.
